Anyone who follows our daily nautical blogs knows we love two things  - the world's largest yachts...and gadgets (especially gadgets that can be utilized and enjoyed during a luxury yacht charter).

With the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show underway in Las Vegas, it's time to pick our favorite new gadgets for 2012.  Here are our top three new gadgets of CES 2012:

Griffin Twenty streaming audio through iphone ipad or computer luxury yacht charter gadgets

GRIFFIN TWENTY
Megayachts like Feadship yacht charter vessel LADY BRITT
and the themed James Bond boat Benetti motor yacht DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER feature iPod docking stations integrated into a ship-wide audio system.   For yachts without a centralized audio system, the Griffin Twenty should prove to be a popular addition to onboard entertainment options.

The Griffin Twenty
streaming audio device turns any Apple AirPort Express into a full stereo system.

The device has a simple, elegant design, just a plug for the AirPort Express and a large dial for volume. As its name implies, the Twenty has an internal 20-watt amp and outputs for left and right stereo speakers, plus a kickin' subwoofer. The concept is simple - the dial controls the volume, while the rest of the interface is taken care of through your iPhone, iPad or computer.

top gadgets luxury yacht charter vacation roku streaming stick sailboat charter

ROKU STREAMING STICK
Many Caribbean yacht charter vessels offer satellite TV as well as WiFi while dockside.  What's often missing is the charter guests favorite online content.

Using the new HDMI MHL standard, the Roku
Streaming Stick plugs into a port on newer TVs. The stick instantly gives any compatible set access to all of Roku's online content, from providers such as MLB, Netflix, and Pandora. The stick requires no dedicated power, features built-in WiFi, and is set to  launch in 2012 for under $100.

top gadgets go pro wi-fi bacpac waterproof camera scuba dive snorkel luxury yacht charter

GO PRO Wi-Fi BACPAC
Whether enjoying a bareboat charter or a vacation on a fully-crewed yacht, waterproof cameras are a must.  YouTube is saturated with amateur vids of adrenaline junkies riding waverunners, bananas
, and zipping along with underwater scooters.

The Go Pro name has become synonymous with adventure/sports photography, and the Wi-Fi BacPac and remote combo kit will users even more control over their favorite cameras.  Just snap the BacPac onto an HD Hero2 and you can control the camera from a durable, waterproof wrist-ready remote.  Using the Go Pro app, you can also control the camera from a smartphone, tablet, or computer via a peer-to-peer Wi-Fi connection.

The BacPac also lets you stream a live view from the camera to your mobile devices, making sure you're getting just the right shot.

From apres-ski private chalets in Vail, to multi-deck behemoth superyacht vessels in the Caribbean, some celebrity power couples take traveling to the extreme.  Here are three additional couples racking up the frequent flyer miles:

Ethan Zohn and Jenna Morasca:   Ethan spent a grueling 39 days in desert conditions to win the hit reality TV show
Survivor Africa, while girlfriend Jenna Morasca took home the million-dollar prize on Survivor Amazon. Together for eight years, the adventure-loving couple set out on another extreme travel odyssey by joining the globetrotting cast of  this season's installment of the CBS hit show The Amazing Race. Obviously not the kind of couple to spend the winter vacation lying in the sun on the deck of a bareboat charter boat!

Jay-Z and Beyonce: It seems these two hip-hop superstars are always hopping on planes. From laid-back summer Mediterranean yacht charter vacations, to mixing work and pleasure, Jay and Bey are always on the go.   While Beyonce worked on her latest album, the couple took to France for both relaxation and long hours in the recording studio. After announcing her pregnancy in September, Beyonce and  Jay-Z were spotted vacationing in Hvar, Croatia.

With the demand for luxury sailing charter catamarans on the rise, the team at Lagoon recently introduced the all-new 2012 Lagoon 620 catamaran at the Cannes Boat Show.  Designed by the architects Van Peteghem and Lauriot Prévost (VPLP), the Lagoon 620 is an innovative solution to the needs of today's discerning Caribbean yacht charter client.  The  yacht seamlessly blends strength, comfort, and performance in a charter-friendly cabin layout .

The 2012 version of the Lagoon 620, features luxurious and comfortable interiors by Nauta.  In the dining room, the settees have been redesigned, as well as the ceiling, enabling more indirect lighting.  On the starboard side, the master cabin has also been modified, with a washroom now placed aft on either side of the cockpit access stairs.  This modification creates more storage space in the bedroom fro the charterer's luggage.  The forward starboard cabin, can now be called a true V.I.P. suite, with additional volume created by the repositioning of the master cabin's washroom.

The Lagoon 620 catamaran will be built in 4, 5 and 6 cabin versions, all featuring Nauta interior layout packages and incorporating wood finish, upholstery, inner liners, and more…

Exceptional living space, both above and below deck will continue to define Lagoon catamarans for years to come as the sophisticated choice for multi hull yacht vacations.

Catamaran multihull sailboats are also available for bareboat vacations (yachts without crew).  SailAway offers bareboat charter, also.

Getting a US Passport Has Never Been Easier

Friday, September 30, 2011 by News SailAway

luxury yacht charter motor yacht charter caribbean mega yacht charter passport

Whether you're planning a Bahamas bareboat charter, or a Monaco Grand Prix
yacht charter
on a fully-crewed superyacht, as an American traveling abroad,
you'll need a US passport.

Once a tedious process, new efforts by the United States State Department have been implemented to improve customer service and create a  more accessible approach to passports.

Luxury yacht charter vacation yate iate boat powerboat rental yacht vacation needs passport
The State Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs now has nearly 8,000 acceptance offices, and promises a 4 to 6-week turnaround on all passports.  The passport fee for a first-time adult applicant is $135.  For an extra fee, express service can bring the wait down to 2-3 weeks, perfect for planning a last minute island escape.

Additionally, the Bureau has created a, "Passport Saturdays" program, when parents can register children under 16 on a day that is not a workday, since both parents must be present.

The State Department’s passport website offers a wide range of resources – from country by country guides, warnings, regulations and background information, to passport forms that can be downloaded.

The Bureau has also introduced a Smartphone enrollment notification system created for travelers headed for hot spots or people caught in countries experiencing emergencies or natural disasters. The system can track enrollees and try to reach them in countries undergoing a developing crisis.

Recently, the system proved useful for US citizens in Libya during the current political uprising.  The Bureau created a system of tweets to feed trapped US citizens information about the best ways to flee the dangers, such as the schedules and locations of ferries to take them out of the country.

Follow @yacht_charters and @bareboatdotcom on Twitter for all of your boat rental and yacht charter needs!

In another instance, the Bureau was able to locate an airplane run by a Canadian company to lift several citizens to safety. In those situations, costs go to the passengers assisted but never exceed the cost of what a full fare commercial ticket would be to manage the same action, no matter how few passengers are carried by that charter.

A 24-hour State Department number – answered by a human – is available for emergencies and questions: 202-647-1512.  The State Department's passport website is:  http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/first/first_830.html

Must-Have New Gadgets for 2012 - Our Top Three

Saturday, September 17, 2011 by Good Times SailAway

top gadgets of 2012 rent a yacht sail boat yacht sailaway sailboat charter sailing yacht charter

Anyone who reads our blog on a regular basis knows we love our gadgets.  Let's face it, going on a Virgin Islands yacht charter is loads of fun, but getting there can be tedious.  Waiting for flights, standing at the luggage carrousel, taking long taxi rides, etc. can be long and boring.  Having a cool new gadget on hand is a great way to kill some time - and have some fun.

IFA consumer electronics trade show home appliances luxury sail yacht rent a sailboat
The world's largest trade show for consumer electronics and home appliances, the
IFA just wrapped up in Berlin. Here are our three favorite new gadgets for 2012 from the show:

Samsung Galaxy luxury sailing yacht charter bvi sailboat charter charter vela yates iate
1. Samsung Galaxy Note

If you've been waiting for a smartphone with a big screen, this is your phone!  The Samsung Galaxy Note offers a 5.3 inch display, the largest screen size available among smartphones. This means less scrolling and screen transitions.  Imagine viewing web pages, news apps, and e-books with minimal scrolling or zooming - how cool is that?  The device also utilizes “pen-input technology,” and comes with an S Pen that allows users to draw and send handwritten images and notes via text message, email, and instant messaging.

LG Smartscan Mouse charter sailboat luxury yacht rental scanning mouse
2. LG Smartscan Mouse

As luxury yacht charter brokers, we're constantly scanning client documents - from bareboat charter contracts to food and beverage preference sheets.  Scanning saves our clients' time and allows us to share their information with yacht crews around the globe.  The latest mouse from LG has a built-in scanner, which the company says will "open a new era for scanners."  Simply click the Smart Scan button on the left side of the mouse, then swipe it over the material to be scanned.

The scanned image can then be saved in a variety of file types, or dragged and dropped into a document or application. LG's Optical Character Recognition technology converts scanned text into a Microsoft Word document that can then be edited as required. The 2-in-1 device can scan page sizes up to A3, which is larger than most conventional portable scanners.

World's slimmest digital camera Sony Cyber-Shot DSC TX55 sailboat cruising charter a luxury yacht
3. Sony Cyber-shot DSC TX55 - The World's Slimmest Digital Camera

Imagine going on a Croatia yacht charter and not having a camera with you.  Who will believe you when you say you saw a whale swimming by an island with a Medieval castle?  Most digital cameras are small, but bulky and heavy in your pocket.  Not the Cybershot TX55.  Just 12.2mm slim, the
Sony Cyber-shot DSC TX55 is the world’s thinnest camera. It can capture 16.2 megapixel still images as well as full HD video.

The camera’s back panel has an 8.3cm/3.3 inch touch-screen for showing off photos and movie clips. It also features 3D shooting options. By pressing the shutter button once, the camera will grab a pair of frames in fast succession, estimating depth to create a 3D still image.

Why use a Pro Travel Agent to book a yacht charter?

Tuesday, June 14, 2011 by News SailAway
The internet has made booking air fare and yacht charter vacations so simple that using travel agents to reserve anything trip-related seems pointless.  NOT SO!  Travel agents are very valuable to booking accurate travel, getting the best deals, and making sure that everything is "smooth sailing" and perfect for your trip.

You have questions.  We have answers!

Isn't it more expensive to use a travel agent than to book travel myself?
Not necessarily.  Travel agents are paid commissions from the vendors of each travel segment (i.e., flight, yacht charter, bareboat vacation, trip cancellation insurance, etc), so there is no additional charge to you for their personal attention to your trip planning.

Don't some travel agents "mark up" the prices?
Yes, some charge a small fee for making arrangements for you (since some travel vendors, like airlines, have all but eliminated commissions for agents), but their personalized services to you are invaluable.  They know of and find great deals for you (they receive updated specials daily -- specials that are not updated to travel websites), and they know the answers to many questions that you have about plane configurations, how to request particular room or location amenities, and how to make the vacation exactly the one that you wanted.  They know details about each trip segment that you might not know, and they remove all guesswork from your trip planning and scheduling.

Pro Travel Network and SailAway Yacht Charters customize your yacht charter vacation

My friends always use travel agents for trips. Is Pro Travel a good travel agency to use?

Absolutely!  The Pro Travel Network is one of the largest travel agencies in North America, with full-service offices in the United States, Canada, and Australia.  They provide services about every aspect of travel (from travel insurance to car service to renting private yachts for your motor yacht charter or sailing vacation).

The bottom line to using a professional Pro Travel Agent:  WHAT IS YOUR TIME WORTH?

Making a Splash - Hottest New Swimsuits for Summer 2011

Thursday, May 26, 2011 by Good Times SailAway
Yacht charter swimsuit fashions appear on runways worldwide

The summer Mediterranean yacht charter season is just around the corner, and we all have our hearts set on warm weather and sunny beaches.  Whether you're planning a bareboat charter or a crewed catamaran charter, the swimsuit hunt has begun, and it's time to check out the fashion runways for some stylish inspiration.

Let's take a look at the hottest swimwear trends of the season. All photos by Imax Tree.

Swimsuits adorn runways in preparation to yacht charter vacations
Sexy Cut Outs:  The cut outs we often see on cocktail dresses and evening gowns have found their way into this season's swimwear. Roksanda Ilincic
went for a dramatic look with a black strapless piece while Emanuel Ungaro took a feminine approach to the cut out style with a floral one-piece. Emilio Pucci joined the revealing trend with a graphic print suit.

Gold shimmering swimsuits on the runway for yacht charter vacations
Go for the Gold: Not a fan of vibrant colors?  You can still shine with the nude and gold trend of the season.  Elie Tahari created a shimmering brocade one-piece corset, along with a gold lamé bikini. Salvatore Ferragamo debuted a classic nude bikini with suede overcoat for a subtle but chic look.

Retro chic swimsuits are in style for mega yacht charters
Retro Chic:  Picture a lovely lady, circa 1968, lounging on the deck of a Monaco Grand Prix yacht, or Jackie Onassis and her friends lounging onboard the famous motor yacht Christina O.  Those images set the tone for the latest in retro swimsuits. High waists, balconette tops, and gingham highlight the 50's and 60's trend that has touched the swimwear scene.

Moschino's
black and white bustier bikini with high-waisted bottoms exemplified the throwback look. Elie Taharai created a textured top with matching hot shorts, while Rochas went with an exaggerated design to highlight feminine style.

How to Prepare Your Kids for a Yachting Vacation

Saturday, April 9, 2011 by Good Times SailAway
Calming concerns about taking children on yacht charter vacations

Like most parents, you've probably been hesitant to take a family yachting vacation with the kids in tow.  Will my kids get seasick? What if they get bored? Is it safe to have a child on a yacht?

Fear no more. It's time to plan that Florida yacht charter vacation you've been dreaming about.

Our charter specialists will help you take on your two biggest worries, and show you a one-month countdown plan that'll make any pre-charter anxiety go away:

Fear #1:  My kid will puke while we're cruising.
Solution - If you're planning a luxury sailing charter, consider a catamaran (also known as a multihull).  Catamarans are much wider than traditional sailboats, don't heel (tip) to their sides and are more stable, especially at anchor.

Catamaran multihull overview

Whether you hire a sailboat or motoryacht, most charters (unlike large cruiseships) take place in calm waters close to shore, and anchor in protected coves and bays.

Also remember - Dramamine is safe for most kids (but check with your doctor), and if your child is prone to motion sickness, pack some plastic bags and wet-wipes.

Fear #2:  My child will get bored on a boat.
Solution - Ask the skipper to limit the amount of time cruising, and instead, focus on discovering anchorages where the children can swim, snorkel, and go ashore to explore.

Most yachts carry extensive recreational and watersports toys, including kayaks, rafts, wakeboards, trampolines, etc.  For onboard activity, many yachts now offer Wii and PlayStation games, in addition to large selections of movies, music, and beach games for use onshore.

One Month Countdown:

It doesn't matter if you are planning a self-drive bareboat yacht charter, or a London Olympics yacht charter.  When you rent a private yacht for a family holiday, include your children in the planning process.

During the month prior to your vacation, show them pictures of your yacht and the places you are visiting by boat. At bedtime, read them books about traveling.  Tell them about the onboard watertoys, and let them them help choose activities.

On the day before departure, have your child(ren) pick one special toy or blanket that will be a comfort during the trip.

The more involved they are, the less anxiety they will feel.

Also plan to speak with your charter broker as well as the yacht's skipper, and the head stewardess.  Ask them about kid-friendly amenities.

Some possible questions:

• Will the chef prepare special meals for the children?
• Does the yacht have kid-specific games or movies?
• Do the yacht have a crib?
• Can they crew arrange activities for kids, such as a
movie night, onshore picnics and treasure hunts, etc.?

Most crews have plenty of experience with family-oriented charters.  They will work closely with parents to organize activities that are fun for the entire family.

A note of importance - do NOT expect the crew members to be babysitters.  Their primary focus is the safe operation of the yacht and the comfort of the guests.

Antigua offers sailors and yachtsmen endless variety.

Friday, February 18, 2011 by Good Times SailAway
Antigua - Shirley Heights overlooking Nelson's Dockyard

Often overlooked by travelers considering a Caribbean yacht charter, Antigua is nothing short of a boater's tropical paradise.  Its south and west coasts are cruising treasures, and the island has more scenic and sheltered anchorages than most Caribbean destinations.

The island's English Harbour first served as a British naval base in the 1600's. The base and its nearby forts protected  Antigua’s lucrative sugarcane production.

Sailing into English Harbour is truly  memorable. The stone buildings of Fort Berkely to port and Shirley Heights high above to starboard are a dramatic sight. Sailboats and mega yacht charter vessels fill the harbour, and Sunsail operates a sailing bareboat charter base here. Cruising past the superyachts in the Harbour is breathtaking.

Once you have anchored or docked in the marina, Nelson’s Dockyard, is well worth a stroll. It looks much as it did centuries ago, with working capstans and lovingly restored buildings.  Restaurants, hotels, boutiques and a museum keep the area lively.

If you are fortunate to visit the island on a Sunday, an afternoon barbecue atop Shirley Heights with its spectacular sunset over English Harbour should not be missed.

From English Harbour, many yachts cruise along the southwest coast to Cades Reef, a beautiful spot for snorkeling.  Further along the coastline is Boggy Peak, the highest peak on the island.

Moving up the west coast, is Jolly Harbor.  It offers a brand new marina and is surrounded by resort hotels with pools and restaurants.  Helicopters tours can be arranged to fly from Jolly Harbor to the island of Montserrat, to see the remains of a volcano that recently devasted that island.

If you like beaches, Antigua’s shoreline is one white sandy beach after another.  Deep Bay at Hawks Bill (near a rock that resembles a hawk’s head) is another great spot for an al fresco lunch and a swim.  Divers can explore a nearby shipwreck, the Andes.  For onshore activity, you can visit nearby Fort Barrington, and the Grand Royal Antiguan Beach Resort.

Deep Bay at Hawk's Bill in Antigua Caribbean

Shoppers can spend time in St. John’s - the island's capital city. The Heritage Quay area has trendy designer shops, while the nearby Redcliffe Quay is more traditional with inviting shady patios nestled amongst restored buildings.

A walking tour of the city should include seeing St. John’s Cathedral and the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda.

Renting a taxi is a good way to explore the island's interior.  You can visit a real sugar mill at Betty’s Hope, or take a ride along Fig Tree Drive, where you can see the round stone towers of centuries-old abandoned sugar mills.

SailAway Adds Language Translation Tool to Website

Wednesday, February 16, 2011 by News SailAway
Translation installed for SailAway yacht charter inquiries

It's hard to book a Monaco Grand Prix yacht or secure a bareboat charter in the Seychelles if you can't read the information on a website due to language barriers.

The team at SailAway understands.

With the help of the folks at Google, they have installed a language conversion toolbar on their website.

Located for now on the BLOG page, the Google Translator allows visitors to instantly convert all of the text in the blogs into their preferred language.

All major languages are available, including German, French, Spanish and Russian.

"Ours is an international business," states SailAway President, Jana Sheeder.  "Whatever we can do to simplify the information and reservation process, we will do.  Making information available in the visitor's native language can only help the process."

For example - a German client who speaks minimal English might be interested in securing dockage for a
London Olympics yacht charter.  One of the blog's details is the role the London Docklands Marina is poised to play in hosting dozens of the newest and largest motoryachts
in the world during the Olympic games.  The facility is a mere two miles from Olympic Park and several other venues for the games.

With the click of a mouse, that information will be translated to read,

"Der Yachthafen in den Londoner Docklands wird balanciert, um den Gastgeber für Dutzende von neuesten und größten Motoryachten der Welt während der Olympischen Spiele. Die Anlage ist nur zwei Meilen vom Olympischen Park und mehrere andere Austragungsorte der Spiele."

Sheeder is confident this tool will work. "If we can increase a prospect's comfort level, his or her confidence in our ability to provide the best customer service should increase as well."

After an initial trial period, the company plans on installing the translation tool on the rest of the website.  For now, it only works in the blog portion of the site.

London Olympics Yacht Charters 2012

Wednesday, February 9, 2011 by Special Events SailAway
London Olympic yacht charter bookingsIt is estimated that London's roughly 120,000 hotel rooms are nowhere near enough to accommodate the hordes of tourists expected for the 2012 Olympic Games.  The lack of accomodations means many visitors might opt to stay hours outside of London, in the English countryside.

Savy travelers, however, can choose an option that will put them within walking distance of the main stadium: a London Olympics Yacht Charter.

The Marina at the London Docklands is poised to play host to dozens of the newest and largest motoryachts in the world during the Olympic games.  The facility is a mere two miles from Olympic Park and several other venues for the games.

The Docklands currently accommodate vessels from small bareboats to British navy ships and international cruise ships. A handful of megayachts have visited the marina over the past year, so the dockmaster and his team are prepared to handle the needs of large vessels.

Gareth Stephens is the dock manager for British Waterways, the agency that oversees England's waterways.  He reports a  variety of berths are being prepared for the weeks immediately preceeding the summer 2012 Olympics. According to Stephens, "The Docklands can house yachts up to 170 meters (558 feet) with a 23-meter beam and eight-meter draft (75 feet and 26 feet, respectively)."

The number of available slips will ultimately depend on the sizes of vessels that make reservations for the games. Says Stephens, "We are looking to accommodate a mix of cruise vessels and superyachts."

Portland Harbour, Osprey Quay marina for London games

The minimum dockage reservation period is 21 days.  As the Olympics will run from July 27 to August 12, the required minimum booking period would run from July 24 to August 14. Stays starting before and/or ending after the minimum period are also available.

Charges for a slip or quayside space are dependent upon the overall length of the yacht. They range from a daily rate of £1,000 (approx $1,547) for yachts under 25 meters (82 feet) to £11,000 (est $17,000) per day for vessels in the 125-150 meter (410- to 492-foot) range.

London Docklands offers full marina services and facilities including water, sewage, fuel bunkering, and garbage disposal. It also has riverboat and "Tube" connections, making it highly convenient for both the Olympic events and all major London attractions.

Should you opt for a Caribbean Bareboat Charter (like renting a car...you sail the yacht and take care of all of the onboard chores, yourselves) instead, you will get to enjoy the endless parties that take place on the islands through out the Christmas season.

During the holidays, the Caribbean islands come alive with colorful festivals and celebrations which are a reflection of the culture of the local people. They paint the local homes in colorful tones, put up new fun window treatments, decorate multiple Christmas trees, and have multiple parades full of lively dancers and elaborate costumes.

The Greek Islands - The Perfect Bareboat Destination

Friday, February 4, 2011 by Good Times SailAway
The Land of the Gods offers hundreds of quiet anchorages for yacht charters

As anyone who has enjoyed a bareboat vacation can attest, it is hard to beat two or three weeks on a sail boat charter in the summertime. Sure, it's great to escape the cold weather for a few days with a Caribbean yacht charter in the winter or spring, but somehow, it's just not the same as a summer vacation. School's out, the kids are home for several weeks, and the chance to bask in the sun for an extended stay is the epitome of total relaxation.

Nowhere is the idea of extended rest and relaxation more evident than in the Greek islands. Here, in the ancient land of the Gods, it sometimes seems as if time stands still.

A Greek yacht charter adventure features a wide array of itineraries with a heavy emphasis on the sheer pleasure of sailing in a locale so steeped in history and yet so amenable to the sailor looking for all the luxuries and convenience of the modern world.

The shimmering waters, superlative beaches, and intriguing towns and villages make Greece a must-visit summer destination.

Glorious Greece - The Perfect Summer Cruising Destination

Tuesday, January 25, 2011 by Good Times SailAway

As a destination, Greece is a sensory celebration. It's a dance with history and ancient gods, and a courtship between natural beauty and modern luxuries. It's also an invitation to indulge in a slower pace and simpler pleasures, like savoring a taverna meal complemented by a fantastic local wine you've most likely never heard of.

Of course, the ideal way to explore the myriad of small Greek islands is to rent a private yacht.

For travelers with experience at the helm, a bareboat charter is the most affordable option for exploration.  Similar to renting a car, you do the "driving" by serving as your own skipper.  Yes, you and your travel companions must also do the cooking and cleaning, but when it comes to saving money, it is hard to top the appeal of a bareboat charter, especially sail boat charters as compared to power boats.

If you are not qualified to operate your own boat, or simply desire a hire level of comfort and amenities, some of the largest yachts in the world can be rented in the land of the Gods.

The famous yacht CHRISTINA O
calls Greece home.  The private vessel of the late Greek shipping tycoon, Aristotle Onassis, this yacht offers huge deck spaces and the indulgence of an original mosaic-tiled swimming pool. In addition to the Jacuzzi, there are three public lounges, a gym, and a game room - and the famous bar where Sir Winston Churchill first met Jackie Kennedy.

When to go to Greece?  Visit Greece between May and  October.  We prefer the so-called "shoulder season" (May and September/October), since the weather is generally good, and you'll enjoy more elbow room and often better prices in restaurants and gift shops.

When to book a yacht charter in Greece?   NOW is the time to make your 2011 Greece yacht charter reservations.

Popular Charter Destination Belize to Ban Trawling

Tuesday, December 28, 2010 by News SailAway

The tiny nation of Belize took a giant step today in the global effort to safeguard the oceans by banning all forms of trawling in the country's waters.

Belize bans trawling in the tiny nation in order to save marine life

For years, Belize, a popular Caribbean yacht charter destination, ignored international calls to ban the destructive fishing gear.  But when the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recently threatened to strip the Belize Barrier Reef of its World Heritage Site status, the government took notice.

Facing UNESCO sanctions, Prime Minister Dean Barrow’s administration  negotiated the buy-out of the country's commercial shrimp trawlers and initiated a ban on all future trawling.

Shrimp trawls are notorious for the amount of bycatch they haul in. Thousands of sea turtles, marine mammals, and untargeted fish are caught in shrimp trawlers around the world every year. Meanwhile, bottom trawlers’ weighted nets effectively raze the ocean floor with every pass, destroying sensitive corals and anything else in their way.

Particularly at risk is the Belize Barrier Reef, which is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second largest coral reef system in the world after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. The reef is a destination for sailors, divers, and snorkelers around the world.

Both bareboat and crewed catamaran charters have increased significantly in recent years along the coast of Belize.  While the appeal of a Virgin Islands yacht charter is still strong, seasoned sailors and vacationers seeking less-crowded anchorages have discovered the unspoiled charm of the Belize Barrier Reef.

With this ban, which goes into effect December 31st, Belize becomes one of the first countries in the world to institute a complete and permanent ban on trawling in all its waters.

Oprah sails Sydney Harbor with Russell Crowe

On Monday,
US talk show queen Oprah Winfrey discovered one of our favorite luxury yacht charter destinations as she sailed postcard-perfect Sydney Harbor with Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe.

Winfrey, 56, hit the famous harbor's glittering waters on board the bareboat charter yacht "Eagle Rock" with Crowe, a Sydney local, tailed by a flotilla of some 20 other yachts.

Wearing a white cap given to her by Crowe and emblazoned with the logo of his South Sydney Rabbitohs rugby league team, Oprah beamed as she sat at the stern of the bareboat yacht, talking sport with the "Gladiator" star.

"I'm having the time of my life," Winfrey said.

The harbor featured heavily on the megastar's weekend itinerary, with a glittering waterfront reception Saturday night, complete with fireworks, followed by a Sunday morning climb of the Sydney Harbor Bridge and a visit to Bondi Beach.

Oprah's whirlwind tour of Australia will be broadcast as a four episode "Ultimate Australian Adventure" in January 2011.

Tourists planning a Croatia yacht charter holiday on a superyacht or megayacht this summer, will be pleased to learn a new megayacht marina has opened - the Mandalina Marina and Yacht Club.  Located in the coastal town of Sibenik, the Mandalina Marina and Yacht Club is the area's first megayacht facility. Special introductory rates for dockage are available for early reservations (see below).

Considered the Mediterranean's next great megayacht destination, interest in Croatia yacht charter holidays has spiked in the past 2 seasons.  The new Mandalina Marina and Yacht Club sits at the crossroads of central and eastern Europe, along the Dalmatian Coast, long a haven for bareboat sailboat charter vacations.   Chosen as "the world's number one sailing destination" by National Geographic magazine, the site is noted for its proximity to Kornati Islands National Park and Krka National Park, two UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Sibinek is one of the oldest native Croatian towns and is noted as a center of culture and art.  With the opening of the superyacht facility and with the Spilt International Airport nearby, Sibenik is destined to become the region's premier gateway for luxury yacht charter and bareboat charter vessels.  It offers convenient access to over 300 scenic islands on the Adriatic, as well as an outstanding hub from which to cruise the Eastern coast of Italy.

The new marina and yacht club features a wide range of on-site conveniences for yacht crews and luxury yacht charter tourists.

Twenty-four hour security and a full-time marina staff  will protect and maintain the 350 in-water slips with space for superyacht vessels up to 280 feet.

The yacht charter consultants at SailAway are pleased to accept inquiries for Croatia as many of the newest and largest yachts have announced plans to offer their services in the Adriatic.  Some of the available yachts to charter in Croatia include SIREN, MARTHA ANN, CLOUD NINE, SALUTE, RED DRAGON, ALEXANDAR V, and ANASSA.

Plan your bareboat yacht vacation or luxury crewed yacht charter now and take advantage of a special summer season dockage discount.  Reserve your berth before April 15, 2009 and save 10% on your berth charges.  Pre-pay for your berth and you'll receive an additional 5% discount.  Offer valid for stays May 1, 2009 through October 31, 2009.  Conditions and restrictions apply - based on space availability.  Contact our charter specialists at 1-800-BAREBOAT for bareboat berth information, and 1-800-YACHTCHARTER for crewed yacht charter information.
