110' Yacht Gets Makeover for Sail Boat Charters in Caribbean

Wednesday, October 26, 2011 by Good Times SailAway

X FACTOR finalists luxury yacht charter sail yacht caribbean sailboat charter

Let's face it - we live in a society obsessed with all things new.  Our hottest celebrities are the young greenhorns with the fresh faces, and shows like the
X-Factor scour the land for the next new singing sensation.  Trendy restaurants and clubs come and go, sometimes in a matter of weeks, and who would rent a car from Hertz or Avis built more than 1 year ago?

The same pressure to look fresh and new consumes the luxury sailing charter market, but with one twist - older yachts can undergo wildly-expensive makeovers and resurface looking brand new!

How do they get away with it?   The simple answer is: classic, repetitive design.

Except for a few curved windows here and there, the basic styling of a sailing yacht never changes.  Driven by the laws of physics and what shape is best to propel a wind-powered sail boat through the water, the basic, classic shape of sailing yachts has changed little over the years.

Can you tell which of these yachts is only one year old and which is nearly 20?

With the demand for luxury sailing charter catamarans on the rise, the team at Lagoon recently introduced the all-new 2012 Lagoon 620 catamaran at the Cannes Boat Show.  Designed by the architects Van Peteghem and Lauriot Prévost (VPLP), the Lagoon 620 is an innovative solution to the needs of today's discerning Caribbean yacht charter client.  The  yacht seamlessly blends strength, comfort, and performance in a charter-friendly cabin layout .

The 2012 version of the Lagoon 620, features luxurious and comfortable interiors by Nauta.  In the dining room, the settees have been redesigned, as well as the ceiling, enabling more indirect lighting.  On the starboard side, the master cabin has also been modified, with a washroom now placed aft on either side of the cockpit access stairs.  This modification creates more storage space in the bedroom fro the charterer's luggage.  The forward starboard cabin, can now be called a true V.I.P. suite, with additional volume created by the repositioning of the master cabin's washroom.

The Lagoon 620 catamaran will be built in 4, 5 and 6 cabin versions, all featuring Nauta interior layout packages and incorporating wood finish, upholstery, inner liners, and more…

Luxury sailing charter: Couple Charter Yacht to Discover Meaning Of Life

Thursday, October 13, 2011 by SailAway Testimonials
luxury sailing charter caribbean sailboat charter sailboat yachts sailboat cruising

"Dear Captain Terry,

Apologies for not replying before. A big work backlog on my return. Just to say that we absolutely loved the holiday. We would recommend 42...THE MEANING OF LIFE, THE UNIVERSE, AND EVERYTHING to anyone and would hope to go again ourselves. John and Kath were completely brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble for them. They were fantastic hosts working I have to say extraordinarily hard. The sailing, the food and all the other features on the boat were so good. And John even got me diving for the first time which I loved. The whole experience was just amazing. So thanks to you for suggesting "42." I am quite sure we could have done no better.

Best wishes,
David P."

Onboard watertoys include towable toys such as a wakeboard, kneeboard, and a ski-tube, and fishing and snorkel gear.

Catamaran Crew To Serve Thanksgiving Meal with Danish Twist

Thursday, October 6, 2011 by Special Events SailAway

catamaran charter luxury sailing yacht charter bvi sailboat charter breanker multihull yacht charters

Last week, we took a look at several yachts offering value-oriented Virgin Islands yacht charters for the Thanksgiving holidays.   Now comes word from the crew of sail yacht catamaran BREANKER that they are also offering a special Thanksgiving charter - one with a unique twist.

bvi catamaran charter multihull charter cheap catamaran yacht sales
Captain Kristian Søndergård and Chef/First Mate Marianne Rasmussen are Danish citizens with over 25 years of
sailing experience.  Their plan for a Thanksgiving charter is to prepare a traditional American-style turkey but serve authentic Danish side dishes for a bicultural holiday feast.

Marianne recently contacted us with the basic menu details.  She said, "We will serve Hassel baked potatoes with roasted sesame seeds, pickled cucumber salad, beet salad with walnuts, and warm sweet and sour red cabbage.  These are all traditional Danish specialties.   For dessert, we will serve Danish almond and rice pudding. It's made with
chopped almonds and one single whole almond in the bowl.   The one who gets the almond wins a prize.  This is a common dessert and game played in Denmark.
"

To further "sweeten" the deal, Kristian and Marianne are offering a 10% price reduction off the regular charter rates for any full-week charter over the Thanksgiving holiday.  Sail catamaran BREANKER is priced at $14,500 per week for 2 to 4 passengers, $14,700 per week for 5 passengers, $14,900 per week for 6 passengers, $16,500 per week for 7 passengers, and finally, $17,500 per week for 8 guests. Charterers can take 10% off these rates.   Price includes the yacht, crew, and all meals and ship's bar and all local taxes.

SCUBA is included in the price and offered for up to 6 passengers (must be certified divers).  Gear is available for rent for $150 per week per diver.

Often overlooked as people plan year-end
Caribbean yacht charter vacations,  an island escape for the Thanksgiving holidays is a great way to enjoy great weather and uncrowded anchorages.

Officially the winter charter season kicks off in December, as crews return from their own vacations, and the yachts re-emerge from the shipyards after their annual summer maintenance.  Almost a secret, few charterers realize that 80% of the Caribbean fleet is already in place and ready to go by Thanksgiving!

Let's look at a handful of Caribbean-based yachts available in late November:

NAEJ - leading the value parade is sail catamaran NAEJ, a 49' yacht with room for 7 guests.  Built by Alliaura Marina in 2006, her all-inclusive weekly rate of $13,500 per week equates to just $275 per person per night.

Charter Chef Passionate about Cooking and Travel

Wednesday, September 7, 2011 by Good Times SailAway
catamaran charter sailboat multhull gourmet chef 5 star caribbean catamaran charter

While affordable catamaran sailing yachts under 50 feet still dominate the charter industry, advances in shipbuilding technology have lead to a dramatic increase of ultra-luxury catamarans larger than 60 feet in length.  Indeed, yachts like the 62' catamaran
IN THE WIND, and the Fountaine Pajot Galathea 65 model catamaran WORLD’S END have helped redefine multihull luxury and comfort.

Yet with so much emphasis placed on the size and amenities of the
newest and largest yachts, it's easy to overlook a key component to successful crewed catamaran charters - the crew!

Without the talents of an experienced skipper and a well-trained chef, a catamaran vacation, no matter how new and large the boat, would be nothing more than a predictable, ho-hum affair.

In an appreciative nod to the talents of these fine crews, we shine a spotlight today on Caro Uy, the culinary lioness aboard sail catamaran
MUSE.

Caro grew up in a family where the pleasures of the table were a habit. She has more than ten years of experience in the catering and gastronomic food industry.  Originally a graphic designer, Caro now prefers to express her creative energy in the preparation of meals with seasonally fresh products.

Having grown up along Australia's coast, Caro has always loved the sea and the romance of sailing.   She is also intrigued by what lies below the sea's surface and is a PADI Open Water Dive Instructor, as well as a TDI Extended Range Diver.  Her ocean adventures have taken her to diverse ports of call such as the Canary Islands, Costa Brava, and the British Virgin Islands.

Is it a yacht, ship, or boat?

Tuesday, July 12, 2011 by News SailAway
What is the difference between a yacht, a ship, and a boat?

What is the difference between a yacht, boat, and a ship?

One naval recruit said that it is common lore that a ship rolls outward in a turn, while a boat rolls inward.

Other definitions:
  • You can fit a boat inside a ship, but you cannot fit a ship inside a boat.
  • A ship is a commercial vessel such as a passenger ship, a freighter, or a tanker. A boat is smaller - could be a fishing boat, a dinghy, a sailboat, a row boat, a charteryacht tender, etc., and could actually be fairly large. A yacht is a personally-owned pleasure "boat," often used for super yacht charters or crewed catamaran charters, either a sail boat or a power boat, but is not a ship.
  • A ship is used for commercial purposes, whereas a yacht is used purely for recreational purposes, like yacht charter vacations. Size does not matter.
  • The distinction between a ship and a boat varies depending on regional definitions, but as a general rule, a boat can fit onto a ship, but a ship cannot fit onto a boat. A ship, in other words, is a very large oceangoing vessel, while a boat tends to be much smaller. Additionally, a ship usually is defined as having a displacement larger than 500 tons. During the age of sailing, a craft with three or more rigged masts was considered to be a ship, but this definition has been superseded, as different methods of power generation are used on modern ships.
  • Watercraft that we typically associate with the category of “ship” include cruiseships, container ships, aircraft carriers, destroyers, tall ships, and frigates. All of these ships are extremely large and are designed to endure potentially long ocean voyages. Traditionally, they required a very large crew of skilled sailors to manage them, although some ships, especially container ships, are growing increasingly easier to run with only a small crew. This is thanks to the development of sophisticated computer systems and improved mechanization, among other things. These ships are also capable of carrying a large volume of cargo, people, or a combination of both.
  • Typical examples of boats include powerboats, rowboats, canoes, kayaks, umiaks, and tugboats. Boats tend to be easier to maneuver than ships, but they are not capable of carrying as much cargo. Boats are also not equipped for long voyage, and some boats will not fare well on the open ocean.
  • A ship requires a crew of people to run smoothly, while a boat can often be handled by one person, alone. The system of authority on board a ship is also very clear-cut, with crew members organized into ranks. When a boat is large enough to have a crew, the members of the crew often work together under the captain. Depending upon the size of the yacht and the amenities and lifestyle promoted aboard, private luxury yacht charter vessels can carry as few as 2 crewmembers to as many as 40, with crew members including captain, first mate, mate, chef, hostesses, masseuse, and others.
  • Ships also usually carry boats on board, in the form of life rafts and rescue boats. These boats are also sometimes used to transport people and supplies between the ship and the shore, since very large ships cannot fit into some harbors, due to their draft or inability to fit under a particular bridge. World's Largest Crewed Catamaran Charter Yacht Nears Completion

Saturday, July 2, 2011 by News SailAway
Hemisphere, the world's largest crewed sailing catamaran multihull

With a delivery date to her owner set for later this month, sail yacht HEMISPHERE is set to join the list of the world's newestand largest yachts.

With an overall length of 145 feet, catamaran sailing yacht Hemisphere will qualify for the record as the world's largest luxury sailing catamaran. Built in the UK by the Pendennis Shipyard, the multihull yacht features the naval architecture of Van Peteghem Lauriot Prévost (VPLP) – designers of the 33rd America’s Cup winning multihull. Michael Leach Design studios are handling the interior. Insiders report this pooling of talent has resulted in an innovative design - blending speed and stability with space and contemporary style.

Decks are uncluttered as visible deck hardware has been minimized, and the 190 foot tall mast soars free of spreaders, with all lines concealed internally. Tenders are also stowed out of sight and the port transom houses a full watersports and dive locker served by a large hydraulic swim platform.

With a draft of just under 10 feet, catamaran Hemisphere can cruise shallow draft destinations, making her ideal for Bahama yacht charters and other shallow areas throughout the Caribbean. The big cat features a spacious flybridge with Jacuzzi, sunpads, and shaded dining, as well as a roomy indoor/outdoor living areas on the main deck.

Hemisphere under construction

Five comfortable cabins, all with ensuite bathrooms offer accommodations for 10 to 12 guests. A professional crew of 8 will operate the yacht during its inaugural season this summer, restricted to owner's use in the Mediterranean. Charter activity will commence this winter, 2011, in the Caribbean with rates starting at €175,000 per week.

Our Favorite Three Islands On Earth

Monday, June 13, 2011 by Good Times SailAway
Caye Caulker, Belize - a favorite Caribbean island

As mega yacht charter vessels get larger and larger, the yachts, themselves, have become the "destination" for charter guests. Onboard amenities from home theaters, spas, and helicopters, to personal submarines, coupled with a "boat-load" of watertoys means guests rarely feel the need to leave the safe, comfy, pampered confines of their floating resort.

According to Jana Sheeder, President of SailAway Yacht Charters, that is not necessarily a good thing.  "Sometimes we have to remind our clients and ourselves why we first fell in love with yachting," says Sheeder.  "Initially, you rent a private yacht to escape in comfort and privacy, then  you want to explore a remote area or an island and immerse yourself in its culture."

Sheeder laments some modern travelers are missing the wonders of exploration by spending too much time onboard their yachts.  "So much beauty awaits ashore, in terms of people, nature, and culture."

In the spirit of recapturing that sense of wonder and adventure, our intrepid team in our charter department has picked their top three island destinations.  Certainly, there are bigger, more famous islands, but for white sand beaches, salty breezes, freshly caught seafood, and no crowds, head to one of these 3 "World’s Best" secret islands:

SKOPELOS, Greece -
Mention Greece yacht charters and everyone will tell you the islands of Mycanos and Santorini are a "must." Yes, they are beautiful, but where did Hollywood scouts end up when they sought a location to shoot the movie, Mamma Mia?  It was not Myconos or Santorini - it was Skopelos!  This secret little island is just a short distance from tourist-crazed Skiathos.  As you anchor in a hidden cove and arrive by tender on Kastani beach, you’ll be wowed by the view of the shimmering Aegean Sea, the island’s tile-roofed tavernas, and the noticeable absence of tourists.

After dinner, take a stroll to the open-air Mercurius Bar & Café (Skopelos Town; 30-24240/24593), or up to the hillside Ouzeri Anatoli, for live rebetika music. This is
Greece and Greek yachting at its best - Opa!

CAYE CAULKER, Belize -
If you're looking for a change of pace from the traditional Virgin Islands yacht charter, head to Caye Caulker in Belize.  Shallow waters make crewed catamaran charters the popular choice for yachting.  Anchor in Shark Ray Alley and snorkel among nurse sharks and stingrays or go scuba diving at the underwater caves of Blue Hole. Back onshore, the curried lobster at the roadside Jolly Roger’s Grill is "to die for."  Speaking of lobster, try to visit during the
annual Lobster Festival  (July 1–3), when the main road turns into a lively street party.

SAMPSON CAY and the EXUMA CAYS, Bahamas -
Avid sailors like actor and yacht owner
Johnny Depp
know all memorable Bahamas yacht charters should pass through the Exumas and Sampson Cay.  Here, sailors have access to thriving patch reefs, isolated islets, and miles of secluded white sand.  The snorkeling is amazing, especially in the country's only underwater national park, and we can't think of a better place on earth to get a tan.

Making a Splash - Hottest New Swimsuits for Summer 2011

Thursday, May 26, 2011 by Good Times SailAway
Yacht charter swimsuit fashions appear on runways worldwide

The summer Mediterranean yacht charter season is just around the corner, and we all have our hearts set on warm weather and sunny beaches.  Whether you're planning a bareboat charter or a crewed catamaran charter, the swimsuit hunt has begun, and it's time to check out the fashion runways for some stylish inspiration.

Let's take a look at the hottest swimwear trends of the season. All photos by Imax Tree.

Swimsuits adorn runways in preparation to yacht charter vacations
Sexy Cut Outs:  The cut outs we often see on cocktail dresses and evening gowns have found their way into this season's swimwear. Roksanda Ilincic
went for a dramatic look with a black strapless piece while Emanuel Ungaro took a feminine approach to the cut out style with a floral one-piece. Emilio Pucci joined the revealing trend with a graphic print suit.

Gold shimmering swimsuits on the runway for yacht charter vacations
Go for the Gold: Not a fan of vibrant colors?  You can still shine with the nude and gold trend of the season.  Elie Tahari created a shimmering brocade one-piece corset, along with a gold lamé bikini. Salvatore Ferragamo debuted a classic nude bikini with suede overcoat for a subtle but chic look.

Retro chic swimsuits are in style for mega yacht charters
Retro Chic:  Picture a lovely lady, circa 1968, lounging on the deck of a Monaco Grand Prix yacht, or Jackie Onassis and her friends lounging onboard the famous motor yacht Christina O.  Those images set the tone for the latest in retro swimsuits. High waists, balconette tops, and gingham highlight the 50's and 60's trend that has touched the swimwear scene.

Moschino's
black and white bustier bikini with high-waisted bottoms exemplified the throwback look. Elie Taharai created a textured top with matching hot shorts, while Rochas went with an exaggerated design to highlight feminine style.

Who is Most Likely to Bare It All on a Caribbean Yacht Charter Vacation?

Wednesday, May 18, 2011 by Good Times SailAway

On your yacht charter vacation, are you ready to bare it all?

In March, our Caribbean yacht charter destination specialists shared two popular clothing optional destinations with our readers, along with 2 fabulous yachts to take you there.

Now, the folks at Trip Advisor ask travelers the question, "Are you ready to bare it all?

In a recent survey, the online travel site asked members if they would bare it all at a nude beach.  The surprising results showed nearly half of the respondents said they are ready to strip, with European members proving to be the most revealing of all.

Jana Sheeder, the President of SailAway Yacht Charters, is not surprised by the fact Europeans lead the way in clothing-optional vacation inquiries.  "For many years we've noticed the majority of inquiries for clothing-optional charters come from Europe, and they have a strong preference for crewed catamaran charters as opposed to motor yacht vacations.  They find the quiet nature of sailing to be relaxing, and the large canvas lounging areas on catamarans are perfect for sunworshippers."

Here are the results of the Tripadvisor.com survey:

All-Inclusive Rate Sets Megayacht Apart in Virgin Islands Yacht Charter Market

Wednesday, April 27, 2011 by Special Offers SailAway
Luxury mega yacht OLGA all-inclusive yacht charter rate in Caribbean

While it is common for small to mid-sized luxury sailing charter yachts to offer all-inclusive charter packages in the Virgin Islands, their larger megayacht counterparts have been hesitant to do the same.  Opting for ala carte pricing, most megayachts simply charge customers for each and every expense incurred (i.e., food, alcohol, dockage, etc) - as an additional expense to the actual rental of the yacht.

This summer, Captain Bernard Calot and his exceptional crew of 5 will buck that trend and offer all-inclusive mega yacht charter vacations in the Virgin Islands onboard the 121'  motor yacht OLGA!

From May 15 through September 1, 2011, an all-inclusive rate of $69,900 per week will be offered, as well as a price of $55,000 per week for 5 day odysseys aboard the luxury yacht.

Rates are valid for up to 8 persons and include fuel, food, soft drinks and ship's bar, and selective dockage.  Specialty items such as vintage wines and premium spirits are still available, but are at extra cost.

This special rate even includes spa treatments and manicures from the yacht's onboard certified massage therapist!  (What a perfect wedding anniversary vacation!)

Launched in 2003, Crescent motor yacht OLGA is an incredibly clean and well-maintained yacht.  Designed by Jack Sarin, she features a beautiful hard wood interior of Sapele and Pomele Mahogany, complimented by tasteful, upscale furnishings.

The yacht's full-time chef, Claire, is Cordon Bleu-trained.  Captain Bernard, Mate Clem, and deckhand Rafael can help you burn off the extra calories with a multitude of water activities including Scuba diving from the yacht for certified divers.  In addition to SCUBA, this well-equipped yacht is set up for fun on the water and carries an extensive inventory of toys including snorkel gear, kayaks, a Hobie Wave catamaran, waterskis, towable toys, fishing equipment, and a 22’ highspeed tender.
