Motor yacht Jana Speeds On to Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Watching an auto race is exhilarating. The elements of speed and danger seem fused together by the power of high-torque engines and the drivers with nerves of steel.  But let's be honest - sitting in the hot grandstands with thousands of strangers is less than the ideal way to view the glamour, the cars, and the grid girls of a Formula 1™ event.

Grid girls Grand Prix Formula 1 race Abu Dhabi Monaco Ferrari Lamborghini Bughatti

Thus, it's little wonder why the Port Hercule marina in Monaco is filled to capacity in May for the annual running of the Monaco Grand Prix.  With the cars zipping by the marina, there's no doubt the best seat in the house is on a luxury yacht.

Unfortunately, the rest of the 2011 Formula 1 races take place on tracks far removed from the oceanside.  That is, all but one other - the 2011 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

It's rare for a Mediterranean yacht charter vessel to make the sojourn to the Middle East, but one superyacht is anxious to secure a reservation for the 2011 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix - motoryacht JANA.

The classic 46 meter Feadship is actively seeking a booking for the November 11-13 racing event.

Built in 1986, the yacht has received several refits throughout her charter career, the most recent being in 2009, in which she had the majority of her hull and superstructure repainted and most of her of soft furnishings replaced.  The Dutch-built masterpiece accommodates 10 - 12 guests in 5 cabins.  With a large sun deck, motor yacht JANA can easily host race day soirees for 20 to 40 guests.

According to JANA Sheeder, President of SailAway Yacht Charters, "This yacht offers the best in accommodations, cuisine, amenities, and service, plus she has a wide array of aquasport toys for guests to enjoy in the warmth of the Middle Eastern sun."

SailAway Yacht Charters President, Jana L. Sheeder, luxury yacht cruises

The yacht is available for the Grand Prix at the rate of €100,000 for 5 days, plus running expenses (items such as food, bar, dockage, etc.).

Sheeder says her office will assist in securing a premium berth to view the race. "We have a first-class team in place to handle all concierge-related requests, from dockage - to ground transportation - to catering a cocktail reception on the yacht."

The race takes place on the Yas Marina Circuit, located on Yas Island, about 30 minutes from Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. Approximately 50,000 spectators can view the action on the circuit from permanent, covered grandstands that protect visitors from the desert sun. Of course, the best viewing areas are the most secure and private - the decks of the yachts in the Yas Marina.

The circuit is 5.55 kilometers long, with a total of 21 corners with 9 right turns and 12 left turns. The track features a lot of hairpins and long straights, and there are few potential overtaking places. The pit lane entry is very challenging, as is the exit, which runs underneath the track in a tunnel.

The world’s largest indoor theme park, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, is also located on Yas Island. The park hosts more than 20 rides and attractions. One of the attractions, Formula Rossa, has the same G force one would feel driving in an F1 car and braking at maximum speed. It is the world’s fastest roller coaster, powered through the 2.07 km track at speeds up to 240 km/h, reaching 0-100 km/h in less than two seconds.

Sheeder believes the popularity of Abu Dhabi is on the rise, and a Grand Prix yacht charter is a great opportunity to explore the area by yacht. "In addition to the race and related social events onboard motoryacht JANA, there is so much to see and do in Abu Dhabi," says Sheeder.  "The people are warm and hospitable and the weather in November feels like the summer in the Med."

New Sunscreen Labels to Protect Consumers

Friday, June 17, 2011 by News SailAway
The Food and Drug Administration outlines new rules for labeling of sunscreen and sunblock products - truth in labeling

For most of us, the last thing we pack in our duffle bag before a Virgin Islands yacht charter is sunscreen.  At this point, we've all heard the warnings about skin cancer and the need to lather on the protection.

What remains less clear is the amount of protection we need.  The confusing jumble of sun protection numbers, symbols, and claims on the sunscreen bottles can be daunting.

Soon, simplified labeling standards will help consumers cut through the confusion.   Starting next summer, consumers can look for SPF 15 sunscreens with the words, "broad spectrum" on the label, and feel confident they're being protected from an increased risk of cancer.

Currently, protection standards only to ultraviolet B rays, which cause sunburn. Under the new rules outlined by the Food and Drug Administration,
sunscreens will also have to protect against ultraviolet A rays, often associated with skin cancer.

The new guidelines are designed to enhance the effectiveness of sunscreens and make them easier to use.

Sunscreens with less than an SPF of 15 or that aren't "broad spectrum" will have to carry a warning label that reads, "This product has been shown only to help prevent sunburn, not skin cancer or early skin aging.

Jana Sheeder, President of SailAway Yacht Charters, says the clarification is good news.  "Whether on a luxury sailing charter in the Caribbean, or sitting in port watching the action at the Monaco Grand Prix, it seems every client wants the same thing - a sun tan," says Sheeder.  "Until now, most people judged sunscreen by one factor - the SPF number.  Avoiding sunburn is important; thereby reducing cancer risk is critical."  (NOTE: Did you know that you can get melanoma - skin cancer - in your eyes?  Make sure to always wear polarized sunglasses!)

"These changes to sunscreen labels are an important part of helping consumers have the information they need so they can choose the right sun protection for themselves and their families," said Dr. Janet Woodcock, director of FDA's drug division.

Under the new rules:
• Sunscreen marketing claims like "waterproof" and "sweatproof," will be prohibited.  The FDA says such claims, "are exaggerations of performance."
• The FDA seeks to cap the highest SPF value at 50, unless companies can provide results of further testing that support a higher number.
• A four-star system currently used by some companies to rate UVA protection must be phased out.  The
FDA decided the star system was too confusing to consumers.  Instead, protection against UVA should be proportional to protection against UVB, which is already measured using SPF.

The SPF number indicates the amount of sun exposure necessary to cause sunburn on skin protected by sunscreen, as compared with unprotected skin. For example, an SPF rating of 30 means it would take a person 30 times longer to burn wearing that sunscreen than with no sunscreen at all.

Although the new guidelines do not take effect until next summer, many companies have already adopted the some of the labeling outlined by the FDA.   Coppertone as well as Neutrogena sunscreens already boast "broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection."

According to the National Cancer Institute, last year about 68,00 people in the U.S. were diagnosed with melanoma — the most dangerous form of skin cancer.  An estimated 8,700 died from the disease. Almost $2 billion is spent each year treating the disease.

Benz-inspired Luxury Helicopter - Coming to a Superyacht Near You

Wednesday, June 8, 2011 by Good Times SailAway
Charter yacht with Mercedes Benz-inspired helicopter on board

In the rarified air of multimillion dollar superyachts and gigayachts, helipads on luxury mega yacht charter vessels like motor yacht
AIR and motor yacht MOONLIGHT II are commonplace, perhaps even de rigueur.

While an ondeck helipad may no longer turn heads at the quay in Monaco, the type of helicopter adorning the pad can still garner the envious gaze of fellow yachties.

Just one year after unveiling the EC145 Benz concept airship at last year's European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (EBACE) in Geneva, Eurocopter has premiered the first finished aircraft at this month's EBACE 2011.

Inspired by the German car builder's new R-class high-end vehicles, the twin-engine Mercedes Benz-style helicopter features a versatile interior enabled by a modular approach that allows the aircraft to be tailored to suit a range of travel needs for the well-heeled – be it taking the family for a weekend getaway in the Alps, or ferrying celebrity clients to and from a St Barts yacht charter vessel in style.

Mercedez Benz-inspired helicopter for yacht charter motoryachts

The EC145 interior showcases Mercedes' knowledge of luxury materials and lighting to offer both luxury ambiance and German practicality. It's all the work of the newly formed Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Studio in Como, Italy.

Cockpit and cabin upholstery is available in a range of the usual top-shelf Benz materials and colors, plus a choice of elegant woods to provide luxury underfoot and paneling on the ceiling. Ambient lighting is also available in various colors to complement the decor – a technique borrowed from the automaker's E and S-Class cars.

The EC145 Mercedes-Benz Style aircraft is not just about luxury but the effective and flexible use of space. It is the only he-lo in its class that can seat up to eight passengers. For the cabin layout, all seats are mounted on rails and can be quickly and easily reconfigured/removed for additional room for luggage. There are also multi-function boxes with features such as a mini-frig, cup holder and table, and 15-inch TV monitor and DVD player.

EC145 Luxury Mercedes Benz-inspired Helicopter with configurable seating

The aft-cabin features a high-capacity luggage compartment with room for baggage, golf clubs, even bicycles.

Like the R-Class models that inspired it, the Eurocopter EC145 Mercedes-Benz Style is the most versatile and spacious helicopter in its class.  Available from the fourth quarter of 2011, expect to see this model onboard Virgin Island yacht charter vessels in November and December.

Making a Splash - Hottest New Swimsuits for Summer 2011

Thursday, May 26, 2011 by Good Times SailAway
Yacht charter swimsuit fashions appear on runways worldwide

The summer Mediterranean yacht charter season is just around the corner, and we all have our hearts set on warm weather and sunny beaches.  Whether you're planning a bareboat charter or a crewed catamaran charter, the swimsuit hunt has begun, and it's time to check out the fashion runways for some stylish inspiration.

Let's take a look at the hottest swimwear trends of the season. All photos by Imax Tree.

Swimsuits adorn runways in preparation to yacht charter vacations
Sexy Cut Outs:  The cut outs we often see on cocktail dresses and evening gowns have found their way into this season's swimwear. Roksanda Ilincic
went for a dramatic look with a black strapless piece while Emanuel Ungaro took a feminine approach to the cut out style with a floral one-piece. Emilio Pucci joined the revealing trend with a graphic print suit.

Gold shimmering swimsuits on the runway for yacht charter vacations
Go for the Gold: Not a fan of vibrant colors?  You can still shine with the nude and gold trend of the season.  Elie Tahari created a shimmering brocade one-piece corset, along with a gold lamé bikini. Salvatore Ferragamo debuted a classic nude bikini with suede overcoat for a subtle but chic look.

Retro chic swimsuits are in style for mega yacht charters
Retro Chic:  Picture a lovely lady, circa 1968, lounging on the deck of a Monaco Grand Prix yacht, or Jackie Onassis and her friends lounging onboard the famous motor yacht Christina O.  Those images set the tone for the latest in retro swimsuits. High waists, balconette tops, and gingham highlight the 50's and 60's trend that has touched the swimwear scene.

Moschino's
black and white bustier bikini with high-waisted bottoms exemplified the throwback look. Elie Taharai created a textured top with matching hot shorts, while Rochas went with an exaggerated design to highlight feminine style.

Thursday, May 12, 2011 by Special Events SailAway
Monaco Grand Prix Megayacht OLAH offers discount

Italian-built motor yacht OLAH got everyone's engines revved-up with the announcement of a 25% price reduction AND a secured trackside berth for the 2011 Monaco Grand Prix.

The 47.5 meter yacht was offering a 5-day race package for Euro € 159,000, but reduced that price to Euro € 120,000 for 5 nights, including the berth.   All running expenses, such as fuel, food, and bar are extra.

Launched in 2005, the Italian megayacht is a regular fixture on the summer Mediterranean yacht charter circuit.  Designed by Walter Franchini, with a light and elegant interior by Cristiano Gatto Design, yacht OLAH (formerly named KOLAHA) accommodates up to 10 guests, and can host up to 40 guests while in port for race watching and corporate cocktail receptions.

Secure Your Special Event Berth Before you Rent a Yacht

Thursday, April 28, 2011 by Special Events SailAway
Monaco Grand Prix Tag Heuer Shell Siemens yacht charter

The rush is on to book a last minute Monaco Grand Prix yacht!

As the dates draw closer for Europe's premier Formula 1 Grand Prix and similar special events such as the Cannes Film Festival, charter customers are cautioned to first concentrate on where they will dock their rental yacht.

"When a customer contacts us to rent a Monaco Grand Prix yacht, we immediately focus on securing a berth in Port Hercules, the only marina adjacent to the race course," says Jana Sheeder, President of SailAway Yacht Charters"The only way to view the race from the deck of a yacht is to be moored in the marina, preferably in Zone 1, closest to the track and Jumbotron."

Unless you are a race team sponsor, dock space in the port is reserved via a written application and can take up to 5 weeks to process.

"It doesn't matter if you want to attend the Grand Prix in Monaco or the Film Festival in Cannes, you must make it a priority to secure a berth many weeks, if not months, prior to the event," reports Sheeder
"We hear horror stories where people have rented a yacht only to find their charter broker did not secure dockage at the marina closest to the special event location."

With nearly all available dockage already reserved for the Grand Prix, Sheeder and her team are now promoting yachts that are available for the race dates AND have already secured premium dockage.

"We have several yachts such as the 26 meter JACKIE ONE, available for the race and with a secured berth in Zone 1, right next to the racecourse,"
claims Sheeder.

Jackie One motor yacht Monaco Grand Prix race with secure dockage

Launched in 2001, the 82-foot Amer motor yacht JACKIE ONE combines elegance with comfort and space. Refit in 2007 by Maiora, the yacht she is now equipped with a large hydro-massage Jacuzzi.

Her wide salon offers a comfortable entertainment area and home theatre system for relaxing moments. Large windows give brightness to the area and illuminates the refined furnishings. Meals can be served in a choice of four different areas: at the dining table in the salon; inside the spacious cockpit; on the aft deck; or on the upper deck.

While at dockside, the yacht can host up to 30 passengers for watching the race or for evening cocktail parties.  For overnight guests, the yacht provides four spacious cabins with accommodations for 8 guests.

The flybridge is equipped with a large Jacuzzi for 4-6 people along with adjacent sunbathing cushions.

Motor yacht JACKIE ONE is offering a reduced rate for the Grand Prix of Monaco.  Lowered from € 25,000 EUROS, the 4-day rate during the Monaco GP is now  € 20,000 EUROS, including the secured berth for the race.  The yacht is VAT exempt, but running expenses, such as food and bar, are extra.

World Cruise Supercedes Entry into Luxury Yacht Charter Market

Monday, April 25, 2011 by News SailAway
Mega yacht TALISMAN C owner takes her on world cruise before chartering

Recently launched 70 meter Proteksan Turquoise super yacht TALISMAN C is scheduled to replace her little sister, 54 meter TALISMAN C1 in the charter market, but not before her owner enjoys a leisurely world cruise aboard this gorgeous vessel.

The Proteksan Turquoise shipyard recently launched motor yacht TALISMAN C
, the largest superyacht to be launched from the Turkish builder's Pendik facility to date. The project was the result of a repeat order; the previous Talisman, now named TALISMAN C1, was launched for the same owner at Proteksan Turquoise in 2006.

Currently undergoing sea trials on the Sea of Marmara, the final handover of the yacht to her owner is planned for mid June, 2011.  Following a short Mediterranean yacht cruising schedule, the vessel will then appear at the Monaco Yacht Show in September. Prior to entering the charter market, the owner will then embark on a two year private world cruise.

Sea of Marmara map - Aegean - Istanbul

Once the world cruise is completed, TALISMAN C will join the charter fleet.

The yacht features an "Art Deco" theme throughout salon and seating areas. The interior has a rich combination of flame mahogany and maple burl, combined together to give the yacht a warm, contemporary feel. The centerpiece is the spiral staircase with a beautiful, custom made chandelier hanging the length of three floors.

Features abound, including a sky lounge, full height gym area, and an impressive master cabin with a private steam room, owner's library, and an office that can convert to a guest double cabin.

Refit of Mediterranean Yacht Charter Vessel Underlines Commitment to Excellence

Thursday, April 21, 2011 by Yacht of the Week SailAway
Motor yacht PAOLYRE refit after only 2.5 years of charter use

How do you keep a new yacht looking new? If you're the owner of  motor yacht PAOLYRE, you simply don't let your luxury yacht charter vessel get old.

Less than 2.5 years old, the 32.7 meter mega yacht PAOLYRE
is both solid and stylish, and became an instant hit in the Mediterranean charter marketplace in 2009.

Unwilling to let his yacht show any signs of aging, the owner commissioned a major refit in 2011, and this stunning retro-style yacht is looking better than ever.

Here's a list of the work recently completed:

- New teak deck
- New stabilizers
- Overhauling of portholes
- Hull and superstructures repainted
- Bathing platform repainted and new mechanics installed
- New fabrics for all deck furniture
- New glass panels
- Interior wood paneling revarnished
- New tableware

The commitment to excellence exhibited by the owners of charter vessels cannot be overemphasized.  Many of us go years before painting our own homes or remodeling our furnishings, yet these megayacht vessels are maintained to near showroom conditions from the day they leave the builder's shipyard.

It is not uncommon for yachts to undergo 2 to 3 substantial refits in the first 5 years after their launch. The only limitations to the remodelings are the depths of the owner's financial pockets.

Few other vacation options offer such a high level of commitment to fresh, pristine accommodations and amenities.  Can you imagine a luxury resort remodeling every year?  Doubtful!

Motor yacht PAOLYRE offers guest accommodation in 5 cabins with room for up to 10 guests. For maximum space and comfort, the ideal charter party would consist of 6 adults and 2 to 4 children.

The yacht is also ideal for static special event charters, as she offers different gathering areas, all separated from each other. Her top deck is covered by a hard top and can be fully-enclosed to create another large area for cocktail parties during special event charters.  The Monaco Grand Prix and the Cannes Film Festival come to mind, as well as the annual MIPIM and MIDEM congress.

Based in Toulon, the yacht is available for charters in the Western Mediterranean at rates beginning at 49,000 EUROS per week, plus expenses.

Taking place since 1929, the Monaco F1 GP is widely considered to be one of the most significant and famous automobile races in the world.  The race is held on a narrow course laid out in the streets of Monaco, with several elevation changes, tight corners and a tunnel, making it one of the most challenging tracks on the Formula One circuit. Although average speeds are quite low, the city street circuit remains a dangerous place to race.

Designer Touts New Generation of Green Superyachts

Tuesday, March 22, 2011 by News SailAway
Green star awards for eco-friendly super yachts

The push for sustainability in the yacht industry continues.

Recently, we profiled  the use of eco-friendly
salmon skin upholstery in superyacht interiors, as well as the first self-sufficient zero carbon vessel.

Now comes word a design studio is crafting the next generation of hybrid propulsion green luxury yacht charter super yachts.

Touting increased energy efficiecy and lower noise and CO2 emissions,
Guido de Groot Design and Intec Marine are proposing two revolutionary concepts for propulsion.  The Intec Marine hybrid propulsion concept makes use of the an electric propulsion setup powered by two generators. An additional smaller generator is installed for calm water/harbor conditions or at anchor.

Guido de Groot Design for yacht charters

Take for example a Monaco Grand Prix yacht, rented to be dockside for the race, then out for day cruising along the Côte d'Azur.  At cruising speed, one generator is able to generate power for the two propulsion pods and the load of the interior (cabin lights, televisions, galley, etc.). This results in very low noise levels, estimated at 35 dBA.

Monaco Grand Prix yacht charter ... Cannes Film Festival special event yacht

Cruising the yacht out of the marina at 6 knots can be done using the batteries. The second generator is in place for redundancy purposes and needs to be started for the yacht to reach maximum speed. When at anchor, the smaller, third generator is used.

According to the designers, when compared to a conventional setup with three diesel engines continuously running  (two for propulsion and one for interior load), a 30% reduction of use in energy can be achieved.

Yachts featuring Intec Marine hybrid propulsion will have a
RINA marine green star design certificate for environmental excellence.

Sail Yacht TWIZZLE Set to Dazzle Charter Market

Saturday, March 19, 2011 by Yacht of the Week SailAway
Mega yacht sail boat TWIZZLE luxury yacht charter

We first introduced our readers to Royal Huisman sail yacht TWIZZLE in January, as part of a story about her Interior design team, Redman Whiteley Dixon.  With the luxury sailing charter season in the Mediterranean fast approaching, let's take a closer look at this yacht - a superb example of 21st century living.

Mega yacht TWIZZLE
is a remarkable combination of a boutique-style home and powerful sailing vessel. Built in the Netherlands by Royal Huisman and designed by Redman Whiteley Dixon, the yacht features sweeping, contemporary lines and a functional integration of indoor and outdoor areas.

Sporting the amenities of a motor yacht, Twizzle's capability as a high performance sailing yacht will surprise you. On her maiden voyage from the Netherlands to Monaco, she clocked 16.5 knots in a 20 knot breeze.

Of course, the typical Mediterranean yacht charter vacation is less about speed, and more about refined appointments.

Twizzle offers a distinctive interior layout.  The forward salon doubles as a cinema lounge and informal dining room.
The main deck lounge is as open as it is sheltered, offering airiness and comfort, alike. The master and guest cabins offer lavishly-designed retreats for up to 8 guests.

One of the yacht's key features is her stern, two-tier platform (it is basically a swim platform on a hydraulic lift). It can be positioned at various heights, depending on the sea condition.

Exceptional in looks, functionality, and comfort, sailing yacht TWIZZLE  is destined to be one of leading superyachts in the charter market for years to come.

New French VAT Rules Could Mean End of Tax-Free Yacht Charters

Thursday, March 17, 2011 by News SailAway
VAT (Value Added Tax) in France now possibly being charged to mega yacht charters

The cost of enjoying a Mediterranean yacht charter vacation may be going up as new rules, and confusion, regarding taxes on commercial yachts go into effect.

In the past, luxury mega yacht charter vessels in the Mediterranean were often exempt from paying a French Value Added Tax (VAT or sometimes referred to as, TVA) on both the value of the charter and on any fuel and provisioning.   Recently, increased pressure from the
European Union to bring French law into line with the rest of the union states has resulted in the European Commission forcing the French Government to amend its rules on exemptions.

Jana Sheeder, a yacht industry maven and President of SailAway Yacht Charters, explains: "In the past, a yacht used solely for commercial activity would hire a permanent crew and register as a commercial vessel to obtain an exemption from paying the VAT.  Under the new rules, the same activity, crew, and registration rules apply, but there is a catch - the yacht 'must be used for navigation on the high seas.'"

It is this new wrinkle that has Sheeder and the yachting industry confused. "So far, the French government have not defined or clarified what is meant by the term, "used for navigation on the high seas."

A manager of a fleet of mega yacht charter vessels in France, who wished to remain anonymous, echoed Sheeder's concerns.  "At what point does 'high seas' come into play?  Ten miles off shore? Twenty miles? No one knows," the manager said.

It seems the taxing authorities are not certain how to proceed, either.  "We are not aware of any attempts by the French Customs and Excise authorities to enforce this new rule," says Sheeder.

VAT taxes - will France charge superyacht charters or won't they? For now, it remains a game of wait-and-see. Industry lawyers are closely monitoring this situation, and conferences are planned in London and Monaco in the coming weeks to keep charter professionals up to date.

Sheeder points out the importance of explaining the new rules to her customers. "While we are not charging the VAT to any of our clients, we are clearly explaining the potential tax liability they may incur, perhaps even after the conclusion of the charter."

Say Goodbye To Traveler's Checks

Tuesday, March 15, 2011 by Good Times SailAway
Travekers Checks not useful as they cost large fees and are not accepted everywhere

"Don't leave home without them.”  That was the warning that actor Karl Malden shared with TV viewers in the 70's in a series of ads for traveler’s checks.  At the time, these checks were the safest way to carry money while traveling.

If you are planning a Mediterranean yacht charter holiday this summer, don't bother bringing any traveler's checks.  It seems traveler’s checks, just like those commercials, are becoming a distant memory.  "After last season, we noticed many retail outlets in Europe have ceased to accept traveler's checks, " states Jana Sheeder, President of SailAway Yacht Charters.  "Travelers who have relied on these checks for years are finding themselves in a cash-flow limbo."

For years, travelers turned to traveler’s checks as a way to carry something close to cash safely. For a small fee, companies such as American Express promised quick replacement if the checks were lost or stolen.

Most retailers accepted the checks as cash, but that began to change with the use of electronic payments, primarily via debit and credit cards. A report by the U.S. Federal Reserve of St. Louis states the use of traveler’s checks has been on a steady decline since the 90's.

According to Sheeder, “The few places that still accept them are charging large commissions to change them. Compounding the problem are the exchange rates, often 10% less than the rate you can get through an ATM machine."

To keep fees to a minimum, Sheeder encourages Mediterranean yacht charter customers to purchase prepaid travel cards instead of traveler's checks. Sheeder says, "The most efficient way to pay for goods and services, particularly when traveling overseas, is by using prepaid travel cards and credit or debit cards."

Brian Kelly,
an expert who blogs about awards points while traveling, concurs.  In a related interview, Kelly said, “People should get a credit card that works for them. Many credit cards offer fraud protection, awards points and some even provide rental car insurance at no additional cost.

Before you pack your bags for your Monaco Grand Prix yacht charter holiday, Sheeder has some final thoughts regarding the use of  debit or credit card overseas.  She offers these guidelines:

• Make sure your bank is aware that you will be traveling. Many banks will shut down a card if they see suspicious purchases, such as charges outside of  the country.

• Check on the exchange rate fees. While many banks will not charge an ATM fee, there are sometimes large exchange rates for using an ATM overseas. For this reason, use the ATM as little as possible, and consider a prepaid travel card.  (You can purchase prepaid travel cards through banks and credit card companies. They are safe and secure.) If you do use an ATM, use the one at the bank, rather than the independent ones on street corners.

• If you plan on leaving a gratuity for your luxury mega yacht charter crew, consider a bank wire transfer.  Make arrangements with your charter broker to wire the tip to the captain at the conclusion of the charter. "Most crews are not in a position to accept credit or debit cards," says Sheeder. "In today's world, it doesn't make sense to carry large sums of cash for the purpose of leaving a tip.  Wire transfers are simple, fast and safe."

Owners of Superyachts Band Together to Monitor Earth's Oceans

SeaKeepers - A Scientific Journey Protecting Our Oceans

The 70th annual Miami International Boat Show is set to take place this week. Many of the floating palaces set to line South Florida's docks will offer plenty of luxury features, from hot tubs to helipads.

But a select few of the luxury yacht charter vessels in town for the show will boast an innovative option that allows owners do a little something good for the planet as their yachts cruise the playgrounds of the rich famous.

SeaKeepers, a group of yacht owners, has taken aboard an innovative new option: a specially-designed sensing system for helping to measure changes in the sea.

The boats owned by members of the International SeaKeepers Society are equipped with specially-designed sensing systems that automatically collect ocean and weather readings and stream them to scientists around the world.

One of the SeaKeeper vessels, the $58 million motor yacht BIG FISH, owned by Hong Kong-based millionaire Richard Beattie, is in the midst of a polar circumnavigation, the first attempted by a private vessel.

Owners of some of the world's largest yachts are members, including Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, Prince Khaled Bin Sultan, a member of Saudi Arabia's royal family, publisher Steve Forbes, and Miami Heat and Carnival Cruise Lines owner, Micky Arison.

The nonprofit organization was born from a discussion about climate change among a group of yacht owners gathered off Monaco in 1998. Their idea was to create a reliable, accurate system that could allow yachts to do work previously left to research vessels.

The monitoring system, called the SeaKeeper 1000, was developed with millions of dollars donated by the group's founding members and initial help from scientists and engineers at the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. The system measures temperature, salinity, oxygen and acid in the ocean and gathers a host of weather readings.

SailAway Adds Language Translation Tool to Website

Wednesday, February 16, 2011 by News SailAway
Translation installed for SailAway yacht charter inquiries

It's hard to book a Monaco Grand Prix yacht or secure a bareboat charter in the Seychelles if you can't read the information on a website due to language barriers.

The team at SailAway understands.

With the help of the folks at Google, they have installed a language conversion toolbar on their website.

Located for now on the BLOG page, the Google Translator allows visitors to instantly convert all of the text in the blogs into their preferred language.

All major languages are available, including German, French, Spanish and Russian.

"Ours is an international business," states SailAway President, Jana Sheeder.  "Whatever we can do to simplify the information and reservation process, we will do.  Making information available in the visitor's native language can only help the process."

For example - a German client who speaks minimal English might be interested in securing dockage for a
London Olympics yacht charter.  One of the blog's details is the role the London Docklands Marina is poised to play in hosting dozens of the newest and largest motoryachts
in the world during the Olympic games.  The facility is a mere two miles from Olympic Park and several other venues for the games.

With the click of a mouse, that information will be translated to read,

"Der Yachthafen in den Londoner Docklands wird balanciert, um den Gastgeber für Dutzende von neuesten und größten Motoryachten der Welt während der Olympischen Spiele. Die Anlage ist nur zwei Meilen vom Olympischen Park und mehrere andere Austragungsorte der Spiele."

Sheeder is confident this tool will work. "If we can increase a prospect's comfort level, his or her confidence in our ability to provide the best customer service should increase as well."

After an initial trial period, the company plans on installing the translation tool on the rest of the website.  For now, it only works in the blog portion of the site.

American Idol Icon Brings Chic to Yachting

Monday, February 7, 2011 by News SailAway
Motor yacht SLIPSTREAM owned by Simon Cowell of American Idol and America's Got Talent

When it comes to a keen sense for talent, creativity and style, few can argue with Simon Cowell's success.  The television and music industry mogul has helped launch the careers of dozens of entertainers, while his brutal honesty has made him a household name in America.

Amazingly, his sense of style and panache extends far beyond the entertainment industry, into the realm of the world's newest and largest luxury yachts, as witnessed by Cowell's own show-winning vessel, motor yacht SLIPSTREAM.

We first introduced you to American Idol Simon Cowell motor yacht  SLIPSTREAM at the 2009 Genoa yacht show. Built  by France’s CMN Shipyard, their largest yacht to date, Simon Cowell's yacht SLIPSTREAM is one of the chicest crafts on the water.

Cowell's yacht décor is a super-stylish mélange of modern and nautical, taking full advantage of the yacht’s panoramic windows. The vessel's interiors are finished in a neo-Art Deco style combining dark ebony joinery and red leather paneling. The sun-deck is fitted with a spa, sun-pads, bar with BBQ, and al fresco dining area, and the yacht comes equipped with a cutting-edge home entertainment system including video on demand and a satellite communications center.

Like her owner, most often seen wearing a crisp, black T-shirt, the yacht presents a dramatic appearance with her gleaming black hull.

Simon Cowell American Idol yacht charter SLIPSTREAMWith room to accommodate up to 14 Guests, and 200 square meters of outdoor decks, expect to see this vessel hosting fellow entertainers and celebrities at events like the upcoming Cannes Film Festival 2011 and the Monaco Grand Prix.

Cowell and his U.K.-based production company, SYCO, produces the BAFTA Award-winning show, The X Factor, which has topped the charts in England.  He also produces and judges Britain's Got Talent.  Of course, here in the states he is best known for starring in American Idol for 9 seasons, and for serving as executive-producer of America's Got Talent.

In a strange twist, the man who professionally judges style and talent saw his beloved superyacht placed before a jury of judges.  In October 2010, Cowell's yacht won the prestigious ShowBoats Design Award for Best Exterior Design & Styling.

Prices onboard Simon Cowell's yacht SLIPSTREAM  begin at 315,000 Euros per week.  To reserve prime season dates in 2011, please click here.

Designer Brings "Curb Appeal" to Custom Yachts

Espen Oeino motor yacht designs bring "Curb Appeal" to industry

As every real estate agent knows - if you can't get prospective
buyers to "love" the exterior of a house, your probably won't convince them to take a look inside.  That initial "wow" factor, known as "Curb Appeal" is critical in enticing buyers to explore, and appreciate, the entire property, inside and out.

The same principle holds true for potential charterers. That first look at the exterior styling of a yacht either piques their interest, or they continue to walk the boat show docks until something clicks.

Perhaps no yacht designer understands this principle better than Espen Øino.  Like Gianni Versace and luxury clothing, the name Espen Øino is synonymous with contemporary naval architecture.

Øino (sometimes written as Espen Oeino) has created some of the modern legends in the charter marketplace, including  Lürssen yacht charter vessels 78m yacht TV (ex-MadSummer), 70m yacht MARTHA ANN, and 60m yacht SOLEMATES.

The prolific designer began his career at the Martin Francis Design Studio, where he became project manager of the legendary Eco project, now known as the iconic ENIGMA.

In 1994, after eight years working as a consulting engineer and naval architect for Martin Francis, Espen set up his own design company: Espen Øino International (EOI). The Monaco-based studio is today one of the leading designers of large custom yachts.

Espen and his team of naval architects have a client base stretching from Asia and the Far East to the USA and Central America. Recent projects to splash down are Viareggio Superyachts vessels 62m yacht CANDYSCAPE II and 62m yacht RoMa.

Current projects from the man described as “creator of some of the world’s most famous and outstanding yachts” include several high-profile Lürssen vessels, as well as two very large yachts under construction at the Fincantieri Yard in La Spezia, Italy.

Mediterranean yacht charter fans may not know Espen's name, but chances are the yacht that first caught their eye for its elegant lines was designed by this industry icon.
