Unusual Ski Vacation Occurs on a Caribbean Cruise

The other day, a client texted his post-charter comments after returning from a 10 night luxury sailing charter vacation.  We responded and asked if everything went well.  Being his third Perini Navi yacht charter in the islands, we also asked if anything out of the ordinary occurred.

"Gr8 charter...all wnt well."  he replied.  "Nothing unusual but the skiing."

We texted, "A lot of peeps on H2O-skis?"  His reply nearly knocked us out of our chairs, "LOL - No...SNOW skis!"

It turns out, the most unusual ski adventure of the winter season wasn't taking place in Vail, Deer Valley, or Steamboat.  The unlikeliest of winter ski destinations this season is the Caribbean Sea, where dressing in layers of warm clothing will not be required, but sunscreen will be a must.

cruiseship offers snowskiing caribbean snow cruise boat with skiing ski on a yacht

It's all taking place aboard a custom-built cruise ship that boasts a tall slope and lift at its stern, a rental chalet, and après-ski bar.

Not to be outdone by the megayacht charter vessels known for their onboard amenities, the specialty cruise liner also boasts saunas and hot tubs.

White powder skiing purists may cringe at the fact the snow is not real and there is no  wintry crispness to the air.  But consider the bright side: deep blue skies, balmy temperatures every day, and a placid sea Caribbean sea with islands on the horizon.

Iglucruise, is the company offering this first-ever Caribbean ski excursion. A British-based travel company, the eight-day voyage departs from Barbados and includes stops at Tobago, Isla Margarita, St. Lucia, Grenada and St. Vincent.

The ski slope is almost 500 feet long, built atop the upper deck to afford fantastic views of the tropics. The slope is covered with a Perma-Snow carpet, said to almost feel like real snow.

The company's website states they are, "proud to announce the launch of their first cruiseship, a ground-breaking new ship to combine the passions of their loyal customers; skiing and cruising."

Expect for long lines at the lift, as the ship can carry 1,129 passengers.

News of this crazy adventure is spreading fast, and from comments by bloggers, the ski community isn't quite sure how to react.  One post read in part:

"I think it's a stretch to actually call it skiing, then again, speaking to the uniqueness of this idea, what a trip it's going to be for people to be linking turns on a cruise ship sailing across the famed waters of the Caribbean Sea. This is not a ski trip most of us would ever consider, then again name another time you've heard of such a trip being offered."

Prices for the cruise start as low as $1,240/pp.

Global Superyacht Charter Maven Closes 2011 with 40 New Luxury Yachts

Saturday, December 31, 2011 by News SailAway

Jana Sheeder President SailAway Yacht Charter Consultants 1800sailaway.com bareboat.com luxury yacht charter maven industry leader

As the year draws to a close, luxury yacht charter maven Jana Sheeder, President of SailAway Yacht Charters, is beaming.  "We've closed our year with the addition of 40 brand new 2011 models to our global network of yacht charter vessels.  The largest of our new offerings is the 81 meter Feadship motor yacht AIR, followed by Proteksan Turquoise yacht TALISMAN C and Rossi Navi motor yacht NUMPTIA, both 70 meters in overall length."

With a reputation for offering the newest and largest yachts in the world's best destinations, Sheeder and her team at SailAway spend countless hours identifying potential charter yachts. "Rarely do we add any yacht to our fleet that is more than two to three years old, " says Sheeder.  "Even when we consider classic-styled yachts, we prefer to promote modern reproductions of famous yachts.  Clients know they can turn to us for yachts that are on the cutting edge of new technology and styling."

Germania Nova luxury sailboat cruises classic schooner photo shoot luxury sail yacht reproduction

An example of Sheeder's pursuit of modern yachts is the newly launched 47 meter sail yacht
GERMANIA NOVA, a replica of a classic racing schooner first launched in 1908. Says Sheeder, "Turn of the century guests onboard the original yacht would marvel at the technological comforts onboard this modern vessel. From satellite televisions to 5.1 Dolby surround sound, the only thing 'old' on this yacht is the classic design."

Many of the new yachts are award winners in global design competitions, such as the annual ShowBoats Design Awards.  "We pay close attention to these competitions," reports Sheeder.  "The best designers and naval architects in the world judge these yachts.  Odds are great that if the best minds in the industry like a boat, our clients will, too."

Recent award winners promoted by SailAway to their clients include late 2010 launch Perini Navi motor yacht
EXUMA (Best Exterior Design & Styling Award: Displacement Motor Yachts 100′-199′), and the 42 meter Holland Jachtbouw motor yacht CALLIOPE (Best Exterior Design & Styling Award: Semi-displacement Motor Yachts).

As to the new year, Sheeder is even more optimistic.  "Our research indicates that 72 new megayachts were ordered in 2011, the largest at 100 meters, and an average length of almost 43 meters. Eighty per cent of these newly-built yachts will be launched in 2012 or 2013, and we'll surely have an entirely new inventory of yachts-for-hire to present to our clients!"

The 3 Biggest Gadget Failures of 2011 not embraced by luxury yacht charter community

Tuesday, December 20, 2011 by Good Times SailAway

Gadget failures of 2011 gadgets fail in 2011 technology misses on luxury yacht charters

Regular readers of our blogs kno the team in our yacht charter department loves gadgets - from great Christmas stocking stuffer gadgets to our favorite must-have new gadgets for 2012.

But what about gadgets that simply didn't cut the mustard in 2011?

In a year when technology heralded the magic of the Cloud and 4G phones were popping up everywhere, the year also bore witness to some failures of epic proportion. Here are our picks for the three biggest technology meltdowns of 2011:

3D technology gadget failure 2011 3d glasses where to use 3d glasses 3 dimensional yate

3-D Technology

We've said it many times - the tech toys and gadgets found on mega yacht charter vessels are a good barometer as to what is hot and what is not.  Take for example, 3-D technology.  The future might be now, but you'd hardly know it by taking a peek in the average yacht's salon.  A quick look at some of the newest yachts like the 61 meter Benetti yacht LYANA and the 56 meter Perini Navi sail yacht FIDELIS shows 3-D technology has not been embraced by the yachting community.

You just don't see any 3-D television sets on the yachts, or in many homes.  Blame high prices or headaches from wearing silly-colored glasses, but at the end of 2011, interest in 3-D TV is the same as it was at the beginning of 2011, and sales are flat.

iPhone 4S
While sales are anything but flat for the iPhone 4s, Apples newest handset is still a major consumer letdown.  Yes, it's one of  the fastest, best-looking smartphones on the block — but it's no iPhone 5.  Apple aficionados spent the better part of the year waiting for a reincarnated iPhone with a larger screen, and thinner profile. In the end, they were presented with the iPhone 4S — a nominal upgrade at best over the previous model.

Motorola XOOM Zoom Android tablet Apple ipad i-pad iPad2 yacht rental caribbean

Android Tablets
While the iPhone 4s may have been a letdown, Apple's iPad tablet juggernaut seems unstoppable, leading us to declare Android tablets as the biggest gadget failure of 2011. A year after the release of the first iPad, not a single technology company has made a dent in Apple's tablet market. Sales of devices like the Motorola Xoom featuring the Android tablet operating system pale in comparison to the sales of the mighty iPad.  Will the new
iPad 2 be the final nail in the coffin of Android tablets in the marketplace?

Superyacht: So Where Do You Park it?

Friday, October 14, 2011 by Good Times SailAway

There's an old joke that goes something like this:  "Where does a 200 ton elephant sit?"
The answer of course is, "Anywhere he wants!"

super yacht luxury yacht cruises

Unlike the mighty elephant, superyachts aren't as lucky.  Their massive size is certainly impressive, but when it comes to sufficient space to dock, their just aren't enough marinas with  enough room to berth the world's largest yachts.  Owners onboard large luxury yacht charter vessels often are forced to anchor at sea and use tenders to come and go ashore.

Thus the news of a megayacht berth for sale along the French Riviera is certain to draw the attention of yachtsman tired of the ordeal of tendering ashore.

A rare 50 meter berth has just been listed for longterm lease in Cap d'Ail. Cap d'Ail is perfectly positioned on the Cote d'Azur, and serves as a gateway to Monte Carlo, just a short drive or cruise from Nice, France and northern Italy.

With large yacht berths rapidly becoming a rare find, this slip will surely sell quickly. The berth measures 50 x 10 meters, and comes with fenders (is there anything worse than a scratched paint job on a fancy yacht?).   The berth's lease expires December 31, 2027.

The asking price of berth number 6 is € 4,500,000.

Sounds like a steal!

The 54 meter Perini Navi sail yacht PARSIFAL III has committed to relocate to the Caribbean for the upcoming winter season and will introduce lower, competitive rates to entice charter clients.

The yacht's managers made the announcement today.  The Mediterranean-based luxury sailing charter vessel should arrive in the islands by December 1st and remain through April, 2012.

charter a sailboat luxury sail yacht sailboat charter caribbean

Normally priced in Euros, lowered rates will be introduced in US Dollars for the winter season, to encourage American travelers stung by the low currency exchange value between Dollars and Euros.  Rates for charters in the Caribbean are $250,000 per week for Christmas or New Years and $200,000 per week for all other dates.  Running expenses such as food, bar, fuel and dockage are extra.

Built by Perini Navi SpA, the 177'  sail yacht PARSIFAL III offers guest accommodations for 12 in 6 staterooms.  When launched in 2005, she set new standards in performance while maintaining levels of comfort rarely found on a sailing yacht. The sleek lines of her jet-black hull contrast against her brilliant-white superstructure.

In perfect harmony with her striking exterior, her interior was designed by Remi Tessier and is a magnificent blend of dark ebony, wenge, and light sycamore with stainless steel and fine leather accents. Craftsmanship is exquisite and is complemented by natural textures and textiles that give this ultra modern yacht a warm, inviting, and restful feeling.

Destination Italy: Where is Sardinia?

Sardinia beach boulders nude naked sunbathing charter a luxury yacht

Sardinia has been on everyone's radar for the past few weeks.  First, we heard how Steven Spielberg, with Gwyneth Paltrow in tow, ran afoul of the local authorities as the tender to his superyacht, motoryacht SEVEN SEAS cruised too close to island beachgoers.

Then, we reported on the Perini Navi yacht charter fleet preparing for early September's sailing regatta against the beautiful backdrop of Porto Cervo, Sardinia.

So exactly where is Sardinia and what is the allure that draws so many sailors and visitors?

Sardinia map Italian Riviera Mediterranean Sea luxury yacht charters

Sardinia is Italy's second largest island as well as the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. It is famed for its beautiful beaches and fascinating history. The nearest land masses are (clockwise from north) the French island of Corsica, the Spanish Balearic Islands, and the Italian Peninsula, Sicily, and Tunisia.

For Atlas lovers, the island of Sardinia is situated between 38° 51' and 41° 15' latitude north and 8° 8' and 9° 50' east longitude. To the west of Sardinia is the Balearic Sea; to Sardinia's east is the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Over many centuries the island has survived countless invasions by the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, and Arabs.  Local festivals on the island still reflect the long-lasting impact of those cultures.

Hurricane Spoils Race, but Party Goes On [VIDEO]

Bucket Regatta canceled due to Hurricane Irene 2011 - book now for next year

As a dozen or so Mediterranean yacht charter vessels prepare for a regatta in Sardinia, across the pond in Rhode Island another race is canceled abruptly due to the threat of a hurricane.

Preparations in Costa Smeralda, Sardinia continue as a fleet of Perini Navi yacht charter vessels are poised to compete in next week's Perini Navi Cup.  Meanwhile, race organizers of Rhode Island's 25th annual Newport Bucket Regatta, August 25 - 28, 2011, have called off Saturday's main event as Hurricane Irene bears down on the eastern seaboard of the United States.

Although the actual race has been cancelled, the spirit and camaraderie that surrounds this special 25th anniversary event shines on.  The big post race party, known simply as "The Bash,"  will go on, although it will be shifted from Saturday night (August 27), to Friday night (August 26).

On Wednesday evening, the captains of the yachts participating in the Newport Bucket Regatta met with event director Peter Craig and bucket director Hank Halsted. It was the consensus that Hurricane Irene’s potential threat has made a no-race decision on Saturday the only choice. Transitioning from race mode to storm mode for a superyacht is extremely time-consuming, and the decision was made to safeguard the luxury sailing yacht charter vessels and their crews.

While yachts will be preparing for the storm, some owners and their families and guests will be able to enjoy the gala Bucket Bash at the Newport Shipyard. The Bash, which has been moved from Saturday to Friday will feature all the food and festivities planned for this special 25th Anniversary Celebration.

Flying Texas Legends - Texas Legends Airshow

Also cancelled was the Texas Legends Airshow, held in conjunction with the Bucket and sponsored each year by the owner of the yacht, Tenacious.

All eyes (not Hurricane Irene's) now look ahead to the 2012 Newport Bucket Regatta!

Yacht charter on coral reefs and scuba dive skin dive in Tahiti French Polynesia South Pacific

When we first profiled motor yacht EXUMA back in March, we were a bit skeptical a builder known for launching luxury sailing charter vessels, such as MELEK and PANTHALASSA would tackle a project to build a 50 meter motor yacht.

Once the project was completed, all doubts were erased, as motor yacht EXUMA was selected the
Motoryacht of the Year at the World Superyacht Awards 2011.  Built by the Perini Navi Group, the 50 meter yacht was also named Best Displacement Motoryacht under 500 gross tons.

With accommodations for 8 to 9 guests, the yacht is currently in Tahiti and is available for charter until early August. After some use by her owner, she will again be available from mid September to late October in Fiji.

With a very low draft, the yacht is designed to access anchorages to shallow for most large yachts.  This shallow draft makes her the ideal vessel to explore the reefs of French Polynesia.

Unique onboard toys include a Hovercraft, underwater Seabob scooter, an electric moped, and Amphibian jeep.

Is a Perini Navi Yacht Charter in Your Future?

Saturday, May 14, 2011 by Good Times SailAway
Perini Navi luxury yacht charter sail boat MALTESE FALCON private charteryacht

In April, we shared a blog with our readers about the key reasons to consider a sailing yacht for their next yachting holiday.  Several customers called to agree with our assessment that sailboats offer a tranquil, more relaxing experience than a cruise on a motorized mega yacht.

In an interesting twist - just as there are "brand" aficionados with power vessels - like folks who only seek a Benetti yacht charter - it turns out the sail yacht enthusiasts have a favorite manufacturer as well:  Perini Navi.

The Perini Navi Group builds superyachts under two specific brand names: Perini Navi for the sail boat division, and Picchiotti for the motor yacht division. Founded in 1983, Perini Navi Group has operations in five market sectors:
- Large sailing yachts that range from 40 to 60 meters
- Large sailing yachts over 60 meters and custom projects
- A racing line of sailing yachts
- A fast cruising line of sailing yachts
- Picchiotti motor yachts from the Vitruvius® series

It is in Viareggio, Italy, where the world's premier brand of sail yacht projects are draw, developed and constructed.

From master Italian craftsmen, to the use of the finest materials and amenities, these sailing vessels have garnered critical acclaim, and a dedicated following of repeat charter customers.

Over a dozen yachts by this storied manufacture are available in the luxury sailing charter marketplace.  Among the standout vessels are sail yacht MALTESE FALCON, sail yacht MELEK, sail yacht SALUTE, and sail yacht PANTHALASSA.

Newest Perini Navi Yacht Charter Vessel Named Motoryacht of the Year

Motor yacht EXUMA yacht charter in French Polynesia

We first introduced our readers and clients to motor yacht EXUMA
in mid-March.  At the time, we were a bit skeptical a company known for building  luxury sailing charter vessels (the Perini Navi Group) would tackle a project to build a 50 meter motoryacht.

Any remaining skepticism has been replaced with jubilation as the Picchiotti built motor yacht EXUMA has been awarded Motoryacht of the Year at the World Superyacht Awards 2011.  The 50 meter yacht was also named Best Displacement Motoryacht under 500 gross tons.

The sixth annual international ceremony was held last week, May 7th, in London's Guildhall.  The Perini Navi yacht EXUMA was
co-designated the winner along with the 162.5 meter yacht ECLIPSE, built by Blohm and Voss, styled by Terence Disdale Design
, and owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich.

The Perini Navi yacht EXUMA was designed by naval architect Philippe Briand. As we reported in March, the vessel is "unparalleled in terms of interior space design and deck organization. There are large spaces dedicated to ensuring privacy among guests, and plenty of room to store the yacht's sizable watertoy equipment inventory."

50 Meter Picchiotti Motor Yacht EXUMA is our Superyacht of the Week

EXUMA motor yacht Perini Navi yacht charter through SailAway Yacht Charter Consultants

We were a bit skeptical when we first learned the Perini Navi Group would tackle a project to build a 50 meter motor yacht. The Picchiotti built yacht EXUMA, is the first motor yacht of the Vitruvius series built by the Perini Navi - better known for launching
luxury sailing charter yachts such as MELEK, and PANTHALASSA.

Now that the project is complete, and motor yacht EXUMA is fully operational and available for hire, the results speak for themselves.

By taking his cue from the streamlined principles of sailboat hulls, naval architect Philippe Briand, optimized this yacht's lines of design, weight, and volume distribution.  Adding two zero speed roll stabilizers gave the hull exceptional cruising stability.  When combined with the installed power system, Briand created a yacht fully capable of long range cruising in total safety and comfort.

The yacht is unparalleled in terms of interior space design and deck organization. There are large spaces dedicated to ensuring privacy among guests, and plenty of room to store the yacht's sizable watertoy equipment inventory.  Unique onboard toys include a Hovercraft, underwater Seabob scooter, and electric moped and an Amphibian jeep.

The bridge deck was conceived to offer a full view of the surrounding scenery. This area offers a spacious saloon with L-shaped sofa, armchairs and an entertainment area. The outdoor living area features two, comfortable chaise lounges for relaxing and a large Jacuzzi.

For Some, the Yacht, Not the Charter Location, IS the Destination

Sunday, January 30, 2011 by News SailAway
Christina O famous superyacht

There's nothing more important than selecting a memorable destination for your first luxury yacht charter.  It sets the tone for dreaming about future adventures in exotic locales.  "Will it be a St. Martin yacht charter this spring, or should we wait till summer and plan a Greece yacht charter vacation?"

But what about your fifth charter - or your sixth?  You've "been there...done that...got the t-shirt."

At that point, the focus shifts from destinations to accommodations - and the opportunity to experience the creature comforts of the newest and largest yachts in the world.

The preferred "brand" of superyacht now comes into play, and multi-repeat charterers find themselves daydreaming about a week "anywhere" on, perhaps, a brand new Perini Navi yacht charter.

At this point, selecting the right vessel for an odyssey at sea becomes a matter of personal tastes and expectations.  But with dozens of yachts seeking rental business, how does a person choose?

Enter the professional charter broker.

More than a destination specialist, the charter broker knows the yachts and the crews that operate them.  A good broker will work to identify a yacht and crew most compatible to a client's lifestyle.

To do this, brokers attempt to delve into the customer's personality and background by asking key questions:  Where do you live?   What are your hobbies?  Do you like to entertain at home?

The answers to these type of queries helps the broker understand the overall lifestyle of the charterer.   From this point, the broker can glean his or her records to identify yachts and crews that might be compatible with the charterer and his or her guests.

Jana Sheeder, the President of SailAway, explains the strategy.  "If a client lives in a world of white-glove service and refined style, the broker must identify a crew that can deliver that same level of service."  She continues, "Crew, however, is only part of the equation, as the vessel's decor and amenities must also be reflective of the client's tastes.

Many American clients prefer the style of a US-built ship, such as a Trinity or a Westport.  European customers often prefer the old world elegance of a Feadship or Benetti.

For many multi-repeat customers, destination remains secondary to the pedigree of the yacht and the subsequent talents of the crew. Says Sheeder, "The key to success is understanding the client's lifestyle before you begin to promote one yacht over another."  Sheeder concludes, "You don't promote a yacht with an onboard spa and a masseuse to a client who doesn't get manicures."
