The biggest highlight of snorkeling during a Caribbean yacht charter is usually swimming among schools of fish, or seeing sea turtles and sting rays from afar. However, one charter yacht hopes to offer visitors the chance to frolic with a much larger marine animal.

Richard Branson's yacht, the sail catamaran NECKER BELLE, is offering two humpback whale watching charters this spring in the Silver Bank, a region in the Atlantic midway between Turks and Caicos and the Dominican Republic.

From January to March, humpback whales mate and calve in the Silver Bank, before migrating to colder waters.  According to Jana Sheeder, President of SailAway Yacht Charters, "you can slip into the water and snorkel with the calves as their mothers watch from a safe distance below."

Two weeklong expeditions are scheduled on the 105' catamaran NECKER BELLE, owned by adventurer and business tycoon Sir Richard Branson.  Charterers may choose either 16 - 23 February or 8 - 15 March, 2012.  

Launched in 2003 and rebuilt in 2009 at Azzura Yachts, Australia, the sail yacht NECKER BELLE was a finalist in the World Superyacht Awards 2010 in the "Best Refitted Yacht" Category.  The yacht received a Judges' Special Commendation.

Four guest cabins provide accommodation for 8 guests.  The master cabin offers a queen bed. Two VIP staterooms can convert from double to twin berths. The fourth cabin offers a double bed.  All staterooms offer ensuite bathrooms.  An additional 2 guests can be accommodated in the saloon - the sofa converts to a double bed. For the adventurous the two aft deck sun pads can be transformed into outdoor berths (removable tent-style structures protect guests from the elements) - great for those wishing to sleep under the stars! A shower is available in the day head for those using the outdoor berths or saloon.

The price per week is $130,000 and includes the yacht, professional crew, and the guidance of whale expert Tom Conlin of Aquatic Adventures.   Running expenses such as food, bar, and fuel are extra.    

When whales are sighted, charterers will have the opportunity to leave the yacht NECKER BELLE on an inflatable raft, led by naturalist guide Tom CONLIN, to get close to the whales.  There are a few situations in which snorkeling is not possible, like when two males are fighting for territory or a few males are trying to impress a female whale. But the calves are very curious and non-aggressive, and snorkelors are taught to approach them using slow, gentle movements.

“Being in the water and seeing a whale is a life-changing experience," says Sheeder.  "You’ll never forget it."

This past Tuesday evening, October 25th, at the exclusive Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, the winners of the 2011 ShowBoats Design Awards were announced.  For the second year in a row, several mega yacht charter vessels proved popular with the judges and edged out private yachts for awards in design excellence.

A VIP audience of superyacht owners and the industry’s leading creative talents were on hand to see the 188ft sail yacht TWIZZLE, a luxury sailing charter vessel, declared the winner in the Recreational Area for Guest Use and Interior Design categories.  Justin Redman of the design team at Redman Whiteley Dixon accepted the Neptune award for TWIZZLE.

It's hard to believe the 2012 London Olympic Games are less than one year from now.  As the games draws closer, it's expected more than a dozen luxury mega yacht charter vessels will be available for hire along the fabled Thames river.

One of the first yachts to commit to the London games is the 75 meter motor yacht LEANDER. The massive superyacht will be available from the evening of the 27th July.

Yacht Leander features accommodations for twelve guests in a choice of ten luxurious staterooms, including two master suites on the main deck. Last week, we took a look at several yachts offering value-oriented Virgin Islands yacht charters for the Thanksgiving holidays.   Now comes word from the crew of sail yacht catamaran BREANKER that they are also offering a special Thanksgiving charter - one with a unique twist.

Captain Kristian Søndergård and Chef/First Mate Marianne Rasmussen are Danish citizens with over 25 years of sailing experience.  Their plan for a Thanksgiving charter is to prepare a traditional American-style turkey but serve authentic Danish side dishes for a bicultural holiday feast.

Marianne recently contacted us with the basic menu details.  She said, "We will serve Hassel baked potatoes with roasted sesame seeds, pickled cucumber salad, beet salad with walnuts, and warm sweet and sour red cabbage.  These are all traditional Danish specialties.   For dessert, we will serve Danish almond and rice pudding. It's made with
chopped almonds and one single whole almond in the bowl.   The one who gets the almond wins a prize.  This is a common dessert and game played in Denmark."

To further "sweeten" the deal, Kristian and Marianne are offering a 10% price reduction off the regular charter rates for any full-week charter over the Thanksgiving holiday.  Sail catamaran BREANKER is priced at $14,500 per week for 2 to 4 passengers, $14,700 per week for 5 passengers, $14,900 per week for 6 passengers, $16,500 per week for 7 passengers, and finally, $17,500 per week for 8 guests. Often overlooked as people plan year-end Caribbean yacht charter vacations,  an island escape for the Thanksgiving holidays is a great way to enjoy great weather and uncrowded anchorages.

Alicante, Spain is the starting point for the 2011-2012 Volvo Ocean Race, and luxury sailing charter vessel PHILANDER wants you to be part of the action. 

The 40 meter yacht is offering a special charter rate to watch the opening ceremonies and the start of Leg 1 of the world's most famous round-the-globe sailing race. 

The 39,000 mile (72,000k), nine-month odyssey pits man against nature in an ultimate test of courage and stamina across treacherous open seas. During the race, crews will experience life at the extreme: no fresh food is permitted on board, so they will live off freeze-dried meals.  Temperature will vary from -5 to +40 degrees Celsius, and the sailors will only take one change of clothes. The crew will trust their lives to the boat and the skipper to survive hunger, sleep deprivation, and whatever nature hurls their way.

In stark contrast, the opening festivities rival the atmosphere of the Cannes Film Festival and offer a chance to meet the crews, see the yachts, and celebrate the sport of sailing.  From October 14 to November 5, a jam-packed three-week period will offer an in-port race, a legends regatta, a pro-am race, and the start of Leg 1.

Sail yacht Philanderer is a 40 meter (131') yacht with guest accommodations for 10 and deck space for 18 for cocktail parties and social events.  Her professional crew of 7 will attend to every need during the charter in Alicante.  

For the event, the yacht is offering a rate of  €35,000 for 5 days minimum between October 29th and November 5th. The rate includes the yacht, crew, and use of onboard recreational amenities, such as the ship's gym and sauna.  Of course, guests will also enjoy the best seats in the house for watching the racing action up close!  All expenses (meals, bar, etc) are extra.

Every year, two annual events make a visit to the city of Monte Carlo a must for yacht charter clientele - the Monaco Grand Prix and the Monaco Yacht Show.  With the Grand Prix a distant image in our rearview mirrors, focus turns to the yacht show. 

Currently underway, the Monaco Yacht Show presents one of the greatest showcases of luxury charter vessels in the world.  Approximately 100 megayachts from 25 to 90 meters long are on display from Wednesday, September 21 to Saturday, September 24.

What makes this show truly unique is the number of new yachts on hand.  About 40 of the newest  superyachts delivered in the past 12 months will be on exhibit.

Sail and motor yachts over 100' are invited to gather this December for the annual Asia Superyacht Rendezvous, taking place December 16-18 in Phuket, Thailand.  Mega yacht charter vessels as will as private yachts will rendezvous for three days, on and off the waters of the Andaman coast.

Entering it's eleventh year, the event is notable as Asia’s most prestigious superyacht rendezvous and is a firm fixture on the yachting calendars of owners around the world.  A diverse fleet of classic yachts and newest builds are expected to attend this year.   

Organizers report there will be plenty of action on the water.  Sailing yachts will participate in two days of racing accompanied by a spectator fleet of motor yachts, allowing owners to enjoy spectacular views.  Based at the Royal Phuket Yacht Club, the racing includes sailing from Nai Harn Bay to Surin Bay, with courses set out by long-serving Race Officer Andy Dowden.

Organizers of the Caribbean's only Superyacht rendezvous and regatta have added a new racing division to include catamarans in a four-day Spring event, March 14 -17, 2012, in the British Virgin Islands (BVI).

Boat International and Yacht Club Costa Smeralda,  the organizers of the 2012 Caribbean Superyacht Regatta & Rendezvous announced the addition of a catamaran category to the second edition of this unique event. 

The racing will now be divided into three classes: performance, cruising and catamaran, with the entire fleet competing for the overall winner of Silver Cup, the Boat International Media Trophy, made by Garrard of London.

Organizers hope to bring together owners of  motor yachts and luxury sailing charter vessels for four days of racing, fun activities and glittering social events in the idyllic surroundings of Virgin Gorda and her neighboring islands. 

Participants of the 2012 Caribbean Superyacht Regatta & Rendezvous will be among the first to experience the brand new Clubhouse at YCCS Virgin Gorda Marina, and enjoy the fabulous facilities of Oil Nut Bay, making this event a truly unique occasion not be missed.

Participation is open to sail and motor yachts over 80ft, and catamarans longer than 60ft.  Sail yacht Marie, Salperton, P2, and sail yacht Twizzle have already expressed their intention to participate.

Watching an auto race is exhilarating. The elements of speed and danger seem fused together by the power of high-torque engines and the drivers with nerves of steel.  But let's be honest - sitting in the hot grandstands with thousands of strangers is less than the ideal way to view the glamour, the cars, and the grid girls of a Formula 1™ event.

Thus, it's little wonder why the Port Hercule marina in Monaco is filled to capacity in May for the annual running of the Monaco Grand Prix.  With the cars zipping by the marina, there's no doubt the best seat in the house is on a luxury yacht.

Unfortunately, the rest of the 2011 Formula 1™ races take place on tracks far removed from the oceanside.  That is, all but one other - the 2011 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

It's rare for a Mediterranean yacht charter vessel to make the sojourn to the Middle East, but one superyacht is anxious to secure a reservation for the 2011 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix - motoryacht JANA.

The classic 46 meter Feadship is actively seeking a booking for the November 11-13 racing event. 
 
Built in 1986, the yacht has received several refits throughout her charter career, the most recent being in 2009, in which she had the majority of her hull and superstructure repainted and most of her of soft furnishings replaced.  The Dutch-built masterpiece accommodates 10 - 12 guests in 5 cabins.  With a large sun deck, motor yacht JANA can easily host race day soirees for 20 to 40 guests.

According to JANA Sheeder, President of SailAway Yacht Charters, "This yacht offers the best in accommodations, cuisine, amenities, and service, plus she has a wide array of aquasport toys for guests to enjoy in the warmth of the Middle Eastern sun."

The yacht is available for the Grand Prix at the rate of €100,000 for 5 days, plus running expenses (items such as food, bar, dockage, etc.).

Sheeder says her office will assist in securing a premium berth to view the race. "We have a first-class team in place to handle all concierge-related requests, from dockage - to ground transportation - to catering a cocktail reception on the yacht."

The race takes place on the Yas Marina Circuit, located on Yas Island, about 30 minutes from Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. Approximately 50,000 spectators can view the action on the circuit from permanent, covered grandstands that protect visitors from the desert sun. Of course, the best viewing areas are the most secure and private - the decks of the yachts in the Yas Marina.

The circuit is 5.55 kilometers long, with a total of 21 corners with 9 right turns and 12 left turns. The track features a lot of hairpins and long straights, and there are few potential overtaking places. The pit lane entry is very challenging, as is the exit, which runs underneath the track in a tunnel.

The world’s largest indoor theme park, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, is also located on Yas Island. The park hosts more than 20 rides and attractions. One of the attractions, Formula Rossa, has the same G force one would feel driving in an F1 car and braking at maximum speed. It is the world’s fastest roller coaster, powered through the 2.07 km track at speeds up to 240 km/h, reaching 0-100 km/h in less than two seconds.

Sheeder believes the popularity of Abu Dhabi is on the rise, and a Grand Prix yacht charter is a great opportunity to explore the area by yacht. "In addition to the race and related social events onboard motoryacht JANA, there is so much to see and do in Abu Dhabi," says Sheeder.  "The people are warm and hospitable and the weather in November feels like the summer in the Med."

Infrastructure is in place to provide an on-site berth manager, restricted public access, a dedicated parking lot for automobiles and concierge services.

Sheeder expects heavy demand for these prime berths and encourages yacht owners and charter clients to reserve their berths as soon as possible. "In addition to Her Majesty's Jubilee Flotilla in June, I can't imagine a more exciting time to bring a superyacht to London!"
