There are daily flights from Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) located in St Maarten (Netherlands, Antilles). It's a short 10-12 minute flight to St Barth’s Gustave III Airport, located on the island’s north coast. The descent is a real nail biter for the faint-hearted, necessitating a pass through a narrow break in a hilltop and a landing on the 280 meter runway that ends on St Jean beach.

Actor Johnny Depp, owner of the 156' motor yacht VAJOLIROJA, opens up about his staggering paychecks in the November issue of Vanity Fair magazine.

“Basically, if they’re going to pay me the stupid money right now, I’m going to take it,” he admits in the magazine article. “I have to. I mean, it’s not for me. Do you know what I mean? At this point, it’s for my kids. It’s ridiculous, yeah, yeah. But ultimately is it for me? No. No. It’s for the kids.”

Depp has shot to the top of the list of Hollywood's highest paid actors, thanks to the stellar success of Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise. While Depp is mum on the size of his Pirates "ransom," a recent report puts his total take in the $300 million range, due to a gross-profit-sharing deal brokered with Disney. St. Barts is a tiny island situated in the French West Indies. Located 17°55’ north and 62°50’ west, just below the Tropic of Cancer, and north of the chain of the Lesser Antilles. Puerto Rico is 240 km (about 160 miles) to the west.

For Some, the Yacht, Not the Charter Location, IS the Destination

There's nothing more important than selecting a memorable destination for your first luxury yacht charter. It sets the tone for dreaming about future adventures in exotic locales. "Will it be a St. Martin yacht charter this spring, or should we wait till summer and plan a Greece yacht charter vacation?"

But what about your fifth charter - or your sixth? You've "been there...done that...got the t-shirt."

At that point, the focus shifts from destinations to accommodations - and the opportunity to experience the creature comforts of the newest and largest yachts in the world.

The preferred "brand" of superyacht now comes into play, and multi-repeat charterers find themselves daydreaming about a week "anywhere" on, perhaps, a brand new Perini Navi yacht charter.

At this point, selecting the right vessel for an odyssey at sea becomes a matter of personal tastes and expectations. But with dozens of yachts seeking rental business, how does a person choose?

Enter the professional charter broker.

More than a destination specialist, the charter broker knows the yachts and the crews that operate them. A good broker will work to identify a yacht and crew most compatible to a client's lifestyle.

To do this, brokers attempt to delve into the customer's personality and background by asking key questions:  Where do you live? What are your hobbies? Do you like to entertain at home?

The answers to these type of queries helps the broker understand the overall lifestyle of the charterer.   From this point, the broker can glean his or her records to identify yachts and crews that might be compatible with the charterer and his or her guests.

Jana Sheeder, the President of SailAway, explains the strategy. "If a client lives in a world of white-glove service and refined style, the broker must identify a crew that can deliver that same level of service." She continues, "Crew, however, is only part of the equation, as the vessel's decor and amenities must also be reflective of the client's tastes."

Many American clients prefer the style of a US-built ship, such as a Trinity or a Westport. European customers often prefer the old world elegance of a Feadship or Benetti.

Information to leave for your house/petsitter when you go on your yacht charter vacation

Ahhh....you are going on a St. Barts and St. Martin yacht charter over the holidays on one of the largest yachts in the fleet. Only a few weeks before you'll be relaxing on the deck of your yacht while being served tropical drinks and exotic appetizers. Because this is a fun trip for a group of girls from college, your two dogs will stay at home, and you need to make sure that they are taken care of while you're away. No problem!

Here is information to leave for your petsitter as you ready to journey aboard your private yacht.

Veterinary Information

Your veterinarian's name, address, phone number and office hours. If your veterinarian does not handle off-hours emergencies, be sure to also include the same information for the closest veterinary emergency clinic. If you subscribe to pet insurance for your pets, make sure the policy packets are together with your dogs' health records, in the event emergency care is needed in your absence.

Letter of Authorization for Emergency Veterinary Treatment

Write up a simple "To Whom It May Concern" letter authorizing your pet sitter by name to seek emergency care for your dogs. Also either leave signed blank checks (write "for veterinary care only" in the check memo), or make arrangements in advance with your veterinarian, either by leaving a credit card authorization, or by asking them to bill you upon your return. Understand that not all veterinarians will agree to the latter; a lot depends on your previous relationship with them.

Your Itinerary and Cell Phone Number

Encourage your pet sitter to call you if she has any questions about your dogs' care in your absence, and particularly if she sees something amiss healthwise. A List of Your Dogs' Medications

If your pets are on daily medications, it is imperative that you have your pet sitter come to your home before your trip, so that s/he can practice giving your dogs their daily medications. If you have any doubts at all about your pet sitter's ability or dedication to giving these medications, it would be wise to consider boarding your cat at a veterinary clinic, instead, during your St. Martin yacht charter.

MICROCHIP INFORMATION IS CURRENT! (Most of the pets who end up at animal shelters are not wearing collars or tags and are not microchipped. Those that ARE wearing tags and are microchipped have inaccurate information on file, and their families are never found.)

Have a neighbor, relative, or friend who knows your pets well on standby just in case pet sitter needs advice or needs to drop your pets by for any reason. Write down that information for the pet sitter and keep it with the pets' food, etc.
